A Maquoketa high school yearbook for 1935 dedicates its edition to the taxpayers of the community. The column notes the class honors the public for earnest support and cooperation that provided opportunities for students.
Des Moines factions within Town Young Democratic clubs clash at the annual convention over the choice for national committeeman. Edward Keen of Fort Dodge defeats Sioux City dentist W. Edward Neenan by a margin of four votes 295 to 225.
Two boys aged 12 and 9, sons of Mr and Mrs F Thomas, drowned when a rowboat with five youths capsized near Arlington Irwin Dutch Creek. Older boys rocked the boat causing it to upset, while Kenneth Halstead and Clarence Batchell saved others. The dam was opened to recover the bodies.
Sigourney reports Keokuk County men representing seven of eleven banks have joined the reformed Vigilantes. At least twelve more are expected to enroll as organization efforts continue.
Mrs Letta Frendle twenty four year old mother of six was found guilty of illegal liquor possession in Vinton. The raid by police and federal agents at her home in Belle Plaine led to the conviction the first for a woman on such a charge since 1588. Judge B O Tankersley deferred sentence.
Two truckers report four men hijacked their liquor cargo worth 4000 dollars just east of Red Oak in western Iowa. The trio forced them from the vehicle then drove the truck westward while the men rode in a V S sedan and a second vehicle stayed nearby.
Six ounces of opium and twelve ounces of paragoric were missing from Dr. KF G Barton’s Ottumwa office in a weekend theft that also saw an auto bicycle 26 hens two picture frames and some cigarets taken.
One-fourth mile southeast of here Farner William Kruiser, 40, was fatally injured when a farm wagon ran over him as he attempted to stop a runaway team. He had been in a field shooting a gopher when the horses became frightened and bolted.
Grinnell College English teacher Eleanor Lowden was narrowly unhurt when her car was sideswiped near Newton on Highway 61. The incident involved a second vehicle and police reported no serious injuries.
Keotruk Judge John M. Rankin was assigned to the Woodbury county district court case against Max Duckworth. Woodbury county attorney at Sioux City was pending a decision on the matter.
In Des Moines on May 21 40 P a meeting of 100 county chairmen and federal AAA officials debated authority. Reymond Sayre and Warren county administrator urged county control to settle local problems within limits, while the opposing faction pressed for tighter federal supervision.
Rev. W. H. Ogreton of St. Paul will preside at the A. M. E. church here for preaching services and the quarterly meeting tomorrow night at 8 oclock. Pastor Rev. W. F. Ogreton urges all church members to attend this important gathering after the sermon. The elder is noted as the Washington pastor’s father.
President Roosevelt proposed delivering his veto of the Patman bonus bill at an unprecedented joint session of Congress. Conservatives in the Senate said the reading would be unconstitutional and sparked a storm of debate.
Tobin Packing Company will open its new 400000 dollar plant in Fort Dodge with a full day celebration on Wednesday May 23. Governor Clyde L Herring is expected to attend the ceremonies.
Peter S. Boshart died at his Wayland home at noon after several weeks of illness. His funeral is likely at 10 a.m. Thursday from Sugar Creek Mennonite church. Born August 22, 1863 in Jefferson County Iowa, he married Sarah Kieher on March 12 1888. He and Sarah had eight children. He leaves a sister and three brothers.
A Sacramento observer recalls a large Russian aircraft with six engines seen in Moscow. He notes Russia’s hunger for “the biggest” and parachute jumping as a national sport, suggesting the plane never left town and that Russia is an ambitious nation with capable fliers.
The Washington city council had little business to transact at the regular meeting yesterday evening and the time was given to informal discussion of city matters. Reports are awaited from engineers on street surfacing and sewer projects, needed before further action.
The Rooster Day parade is featured on Wednesday May 29 in Washington attracting crowds. Prizes announced by the Chamber of Commerce include cash for heavy and handsome roosters and for drivers and costumes, with a rumored rooster race and free public guessing events. Participants urged to plan now and prepare attire for roosters.
Funeral services for Dr. E C Allen longtime Wayland physician will be at 2 p m Wednesday at the Methodist church in Wayland conducted by Rev J J Pritchard Burial will be at Wayland He was a brother of Mrs Carl Wedges of Washington and died Sunday evening after a brief heart ailment He had practiced in Wayland for 26 years.
Judge D. W. Hamilton of Grinnell, who returned here yesterday after a recess in the March term of court, spent the daytime session hearing matters and preparing for further proceedings.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam and Deputy Stan Kiesey report progress in reducing the delinquent vehicle list. From an initial tally of 119 cars 15 trucks seven trailers and two motorcycles the number dropped by 45 cars one truck and two motorcycles after notices. Most removals swept up junked stored or transferred vehicles while some owners were urged to license or report disposition. If no response is received seizures and sales may follow though cooperation is expected. Washington county reports 4 740 licensed cars and 540 trucks this year with state highway patrolman Wilbur Eicher noting the county has fewer delinquents than other counties in the district.
May 21 Chicago hog market saw choice fat hogs hit ten dollars per hundred pounds, a peak since 1930. Demand was heavy but supply scarce with 9,000 receipts. top price rose 25 cents from yesterday. After processing tax, price reached 12.25, highest May level in over nine years as a nationwide buying wave spreads from leading centers.

Max Duckworth resigns as Woodbury county attorney amid political upheaval. Judge Rice scheduled a hearing for May 28.
Eugene Feuling of New Hampton, chairman of the Democratic central committee, pled guilty to failing to report part of campaign contributions and was fined 500 by Judge Russell Jorday in Polk County District Court. He cited duties of office and business as the cause for the omission.
On May 21 a solo detective halted five masked gunmen attempting a Sears, Roebuck & Co. heist in Chicago’s north side. The bandits, armed with machine guns, tried to hold up the retail store but were repelled by the officer’s timely intervention.
Washington county old age assistance chairman H G Richardson says some entities charge fees to cash warrants on the old age pension fund. The Amended and Revised Old Age Assistance Act prohibits charging fees or discounting warrants and empowers investigators to take oaths in their work.
Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma in the sixth judicial district is ill at home. He adjourned Newton court for two weeks and will resume active duties when his condition allows. He frequently presides in Washington and is well known locally.
In Covina California eleven elephants stampeded at the Al G Barnes circus training quarters killing trainer Joe Reed and wrecking a movie jungle scene before handlers corralled the beasts.
The Methodist Epworth League installed new officers during the Sunday service. President Myray Salladay and vice presidents Virginia Kephart Bea trice Moore Martha Anne Mace along with secretary treasurer Vernon Bickel and staff Alta Grecian Ruth Speidel were introduced by retiring president George Means and installed by Dr. F C Witzigman.
Miss Marguerite McGugin arrived Saturday night from Cedar Rapids to visit at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Reid. She is Mrs. Reid's sister.
A suspect exchanged gunfire with detective James Arlington, dropping a black satchel filled with money before fleeing the scene. Police search for the wounded or accomplices as investigators review crime reports and surveillance footage.

PWA engineers become acting state directors with Iowa assignments to key posts including P F Hopkins pilot engineer and J E Crooks finance director. Iowa wage scales vary from $22 unskilled to $79 professional in large cities.
Washington welcomed sun after several days of rain as temperatures remained about five degrees below normal. Yesterday's rainfall totaled .24 of an inch, bringing March totals to three and a half inches. Des Moines reports sunshine across the state, with Federal Meteorologist Charles D. Reed predicting fair weather tonight and tomorrow.
