A fire in Hardin county Buckeye engulfed a quarter of the business district destroying two stores and a filling station. The blaze began in a shed likely by children playing with matches and quickly spread to a pool hall tavern another filling station and a garage with three upstairs apartments. Loss was about 15000. Alden and Town Falls crews arrived too late to save the structures.

LaGuardia To Lead Civilian Defense Agency
President Roosevelt created the Civilian Defense agency and named New York Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia as its director. The agency will mobilize civilians for home defense on a voluntary basis with decentralized administration near regional councils of defense and emergency offices. All Aboard Egyptian Ship Safe
Berlin May 20 The Zamzam passenger liner was sunk after rescue of all aboard by a German warship. The ship carried 323 men women and children and 1206 crew members and had been missing since April 10 after leaving Recife Brazil. The spokesman said the vessel carried contraband and was sunk under blockade rules.

Carl Dorotheus Koehler 85 longtime Ainsworth farmer died at 10 15 p m at his home three miles southwest of Ainsworth He was born September 17 1855 in Geroot husen Ost Freisland Germany and came to America in 1881 He married Judy Ruben March 25 1885 in Hartsburg Ill They lived in Hartsburg twenty years before moving to Ainsworth in 1904 Surviving are nine children 33 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren plus a brother and a sister Funeral services will be 2 30 Wednesday at the United Presbyterian Church Ainsworth with burial in Ainsworth Cemetery.
