Humboldt County old timers predict a cool and mer. Mallard and teal ducks are nesting along the streams here instead of moving farther north as they usually do.
Cedar Rapids hosts the Lions Club annual state convention with more than 300 Lions and auxiliary members expected to attend from across Iowa.
Erma Marie Talbot, 28, of Des Moines, remained unconscious in serious condition at Skiff hospital after a Friday night auto crash near Newton. Gale Pebbles, 23, of Bloomfield, driver of the car, was fatally injured.
At the Shrine auditorium a citizenship meeting featured girls in native costumes dancing for the crowd. Performers included Geral dine DeMarco of Italian descent Angeline Kakos of Greek heritage and Emily Valadez of Mexican background.
The red ding of Hans Nielsen and Jeanette Mark both 22 face a possible June postponement as Nielsen, a Burlington Railroad fireman, suffers poliomyelitis. This marks the first report of the year for the case.
William R. Graf 58 owner of Graf bottling works in Iowa City died at home after a long illness. A lifelong Iowa City resident and third generation head of the bottling firm, he was well known in eastern Iowa. Survived by two sons and a daughter. Funeral set for St Marys church Tuesday.

Humboldt Velma Madsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Adolph Madsen near Rutland, was the sole graduate this year from Maple Lawn school. The usual exercises and a school picture day were held Friday for her graduation.
More than 200 hairdressers from Cedar Rapids Cedar Rapids West Union and Iowa City attended an educational meeting. Demonstrations and a Parade of the Years show highlighted hairstyles from 1870 to the present. The event closed with a dance. Hosts included National Hairdressers Association affiliates.
In a colorful Iowa ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium sixty men and women were awarded citizenship. More than 2,000 attended as Federal District Judge Charles Dewey urged new Americans to fulfill civic duties. About 400 new citizens, from 18 nationalities, joined in the oath. Mayor Mark Conkling welcomed the newcomers into the American brotherhood.
Absentee ballots are available for the June 3 primary. County Auditor Ethel Grecian Wilson announced voters absent from their home precincts may apply to receive ballots by mail or vote in a booth at the auditor’s office, with required affidavits. Ballots will be sent to voters and counted with in person ballots on election day.
The Memorial Sunday sermon for the Presbyterian church will be preached by Br. FF W Eastwood for Washington patriotic societies. Arrangements were made by the ministerial association at a special meeting with Mrs Florence Hout president of the Women’s Relief corps assisting. The service is held annually on the Sunday before Memorial Day in the city.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam reports a confession signed by Thomas Jefferson Bell, 20, of Huron South Dakota, admitting car theft near the Steinbeck garage at Rubio on April 23. Bell, jailed six months at Harrison County Logan Iowa for breaking into a cream station, also confessed to an oil station burglary at What Cheer to steal gasoline for the car. He abandoned the vehicle at Tama and it was recovered and returned to Steinbeek.
Members of all patriotic societies are invited to attend an appreciation sermon. The service will be held at the Presbyterian church at 10:45 Sunday morning.
Rev William M Nichol of Washington Presbyterian church departed Keokuk presbytery for Buffalo New York to attend the United Presbyterian general assembly opening Wednesday. He will invite the assembly to meet in Washington in 1941 and help celebrate the church centennial with invitations from the Washington Church Chamber of Commerce Y M C A and the Washington ministerial association. The Buffalo assembly May 22 27 faces decisions on Roosevelt Vatican ambassador and church union issues as delegates from over 200000 members and 300 delegates gather.
The report shows .85 inch rainfall on Saturday night and Saturday. Sunday reached 67 degrees, with a low of 47. A warm trend followed with temperatures rising to 80 degrees this afternoon.
An earthquake cracked the Alamo canal in the Imperial Valley causing an epidemic of contaminated water. From Saturday night into Sunday, tremors halted water flow and damaged property worth millions. At least eight people are dead due to the disaster.
A collision near West Chester involved a car owned by John Fladung driven by his daughter Bertha 16 and a car owned and driven by John Lockwood 83. Both vehicles were damaged but all occupants escaped injury. The accident occurred at an intersection near the Flading home four miles northwest of Chester on Saturday afternoon.
Coach Kenneth Kimberlin outlines an afternoon of events for Stewart and Lincoln fourth to sixth grade boys on May 28 at Stewart school grounds. At 1:30 three softball games followed by a 2:20 track meet, with 68 participants chosen captains and teams. Chocolate milk is served at 3:00 by the Stewart PTA.
Harry Ramseyer was to be sworn in today to fill the vacancy on the Washington board of education. He will serve the remainder of Dr J Pease's term, who resigned after a third term, citing time demands. The board has had a busy year with extensive school work ahead of the March annual election.
Mayor Lytle learns from John Wallbank that Washington's 1940 census figure is 5199 or unofficially higher, marking a gain of 385 from 4814 and suggesting a ten year total above 400. Wallbank lists additional census figures as part of a broader release.
Matilda Parker born in 1841 in Ireland and believed to be Washington county’s oldest resident died at 2 PM Sunday at her West Chester home. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at the West Chester Methodist church, with burial in Prairie View cemetery at Gilman, Iowa after services in Gilman.
Washington reports say President Roosevelt may appoint Col. Frank Knox of Chicago as secretary of the Navy and consider former Governor Alfred M Landon of Kansas for secretary of war. Knox and Landon were Republican nominees in 1936. Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison is a candidate for governor of New Jersey.
Allied counter-attacks checked a German wedge from the Somme to the Oise creating a jagged front from Oise to St. Quentin and Peronne. French reports claim Weregan stiffened defenses at Le Fere and St. Quentin while German spokesmen say they repulsed counter-attacks as they drive toward the channel.
Four 18 year old boys from Washington, Iowa were injured when the car swerved off a bridge near Oakland Mills and crashed into a tree. They were brought to Henry County hospital and Washington hospital with non fatal injuries including scalp and neck injuries, chest and head injuries, and a knee injury.
Today marks the thirteenth anniversary of Charles A Lindberghs solo flight to Paris. He began from Mineola New York on May 20 1927 with two sandwiches and a chocolate bar and landed in Paris the next night. He returned a hero. Pan American Airways also celebrates its first anniversary of regular trans Atlantic service. The Yankee Clipper completed its 152nd ocean flight.
