Dr W Bowers urged the Kingston high school senior class to avoid cheap pleasures and pursue the best, likening the kingdom of heaven to a treasure and a pearl. The service, a union baccalaureate at the Washington churches, featured the school chorus and readings by local pastors.
John C. W. Smith 37, formerly with Iowa Southern Utilities at Washington, electrocuted on a pole in Dubuque while with Interstate Power. He lived in Clinton and leaves a widow, three children, a sister Miss Bessie Smith, and several brothers. Funeral plans set for Drakesville, his boyhood home, Tuesday.
Senate committee hearing in Raleigh heard North Carolina figures deny knowledge of Smith campaign finances for the state fight against Senator Simmons. John G. Watson of Kinston and James E. Caraway of Asheville testified they supported Smith but denied outside funds or a formal Smith campaign manager.
Washington high school tops the Little Six at Fairfield with 12-point margin over Burlington and Otterville rivals. The Pleasant Valley dam on Goose Creek near Castle Gate Utah was weakening after overflow from the Price river. Officials warned of possible collapse within four hours prompting evacuation of Castle Gate Helper and surrounding areas. If the dam fails waters could force residents to hills as authorities organize food and shelter.

Berlin May 21 final returns from yesterday's Reichstag election reveal socialists 152 seats and notable gains for nationalist and economic parties. Other results include centrists 62, communists 54, folks party 44, democrats 25, and smaller parties. Washington delegation led by Richard McCleery Claude Tucker Lee Holland and others attended the state Men s club convention in Des Moines over the weekend. The local club sent the largest delegation in the state and McCleery was reelected lieutenant governor for the east Iowa district. Allen Harrick of Des Moines was elected governor with a state structure of governor and district lieutenants. McCleery Brown and Jennings spoke while Jennings served on the auditing committee Holland on the nominating committee and McKay on the resolutions committee.
A mob of about 50 men stormed the Center jail in Texas and dragged a Black suspect named Evans from confinement. They hanged him from a large oak tree in the courthouse yard after he was accused of fatally clubbing farmer John Wheeler. The incident occurred today as part of a violent mob action.
The high school auditorium hosts a May 29 performance of H M S Pinafore with a chorus of more than twenty five voices led by Norma Reaney Keila Anderson Edna Lewis Ruth Bridges Edna Bridges and other cast members. The choir rehearses nightly except tonight while the Methodist church hosts a session. Miss Marie Landau led the Volunteers of America tag day drive on Saturday raising 132.58 dollars. John Applegate won first prize with 9.78, Evelyn Watson second with 7.80, Tom Duncan third with 7.22, and prizes also went to Helen Melinski Mildred Lemley Bertha Mae Reinert and Naomi Simpson. Twenty other children received movie passes.

Fire stops efforts to rescue 150 men entombed in a Pennsylvania coal mine as the death toll rises. Forty nine bodies have been recovered.
A phosgene gas tank exploded in Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg, killing eleven including four firemen and five police officers. Officials say the gas was stored for seven years and had been sold to dye companies. residents fled as gas drifted over the Hofe canal and warnings of evacuation and aid efforts spread through Webbeland and Wilhelmsburg.
