The southern Presbyterian general assembly in Atlanta referred a motion for union with the northern branch to Presbyteries delaying final action and not reapportioning after the 1920 census. In Congress the Swing-Johnson Boulder Dam bill advances with speech day ahead and calendar action planned.
Felix Deutsch president of the German General Electric company died suddenly of apoplexy in Berlin. He celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday and received congratulatory messages from world leaders including President von Hindenburg and Foreign Minister Stresemann. Deutsch founded the Allgemeine Elektrizitats Gesellschaft and later succeeded Walter Rathenau as head of the concern.
One year has passed since Lindbergh departed Roosevelt Field on the Spirit of St. Louis for Paris at 7 52 am. Paris time marked as the greatest aviation feat. He then piloted the same craft across the United States and Central America, fueling a major boom in aviation.
In heavy fog the Clyde Line steamer Mohawk was beached three miles south of Atlantic Highlands New Jersey after colliding with S S Jefferson of the Old Dominion line. Mohawk carried 85 passengers and 120 crew and distress signals were sent. George Washington stood by as officials planned transfers and aid. The Jefferson was leaking and returning to New York with a waterlogged hold.

The Fortnightly club hosted a May dinner for 220 members at the First United Presbyterian church with Anna Dawson presiding. Edith Morton of Monmouth College spoke on India and shared vivid personal experiences and poetry excerpts, drawing enthusiastic response.
Atlanta reports General Nathan Bedford Forrest, grand dragon of the Georgia Ku Klux Klan, urged Klansmen to block Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York for the Democratic presidential nomination. Forrest said the letter, dated April 23, urged opposition unless a Roman Catholic occupies the White House.
Nine students will compete in an originality based oratorical contest at the high school next Monday at eight o'clock. Prizes are offered by the Rotary club with awards presented at the Rotary meeting on Monday May 28. After an executive committee meeting, Memorial Day events are set for May 30 starting at nine in Central Park with Richard McCleery delivering the address. The parade will depart from the square at ten, with processes to Elm Grove and Woodlawn cemeteries and graveside programs after decorations.

President Coolidge urged American colleges to protect spiritual values over materialism during the Phillips Academy 150th anniversary exercises in Andover Massachusetts. He said student self standards reflect the world’s ethics and that classroom grades do not capture true practical life values.
United Press reports Feng Yu Hsiang forces push toward Tianjin while Chang Tsung Chang and Sun Chuan Fang withdraw. In Beijing thirteen students shot by authorities for alleged subversion. Japan prepares airdrome space near Peking legation area and pledges neutral action to protect peace in Manchuria. Yang Sen evacuates Wan Hsien as Kuo Ju Ung and Fang Tsao Tsun attack Szechwan capital.
A high school manual training exhibit drew 662 visitors who signed a registration book, with many more likely unseen. Freshman girls under Miss Lois Brown in domestic science created sewing pieces, while Prof. W F Bickel directed about 250 samples of manual training work.
Waneta Gustin Marchant Ihrig, 20, of Des Moines, aims to remarry Lawrence E. Ihrig, 22, four days after ending marriages with two husbands. Clarence Marchant testified in district court as he sought a divorce, alleging desertion against Ihrig who countersigned as witness.
