Flooded streams from four inches of rain surged into the English River in north Washington County, running well above flood stage and nearly touching Highway 22 near Kalona. Hundreds of acres flooded as dikes failed, farms isolated, and debris jams threatened Bunker Hill bridge. County crews cleared jams while farmers faced replanting and cleanup.

The 104th annual commencement at Washington High School is scheduled for Tuesday May 21 at 8 p.m. in the high school gymnasium featuring graduating seniors as speakers. The district’s sixth grade bands will tour three elementary centers Stewart Lincoln and Brighton, with meals at Brighton. The Senior Citizens Spring Festival at the YMCA runs Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a talent show on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Exotic Animal Auction Draws Crowd at Grinnell Exchange
Grinnell Livestock Exchange hosted an Exotic Animal and Antique Auction drawing over 1,500 attendees to bid on 295 animals including a buffalo and a dozen llamas. Lloyd Durr of rural Grinnell paid 1250 dollars for the buffalo bull as more than 25 thousand dollars changed hands with buyers and sellers from nine states.
