Burglars Loot Nickerson Cafe On North Fourth Avenue

Nickerson cafe on North Fourth Avenue was burglarized last night. Thieves took seven and ten cartons of cigarettes Camels Chesterfields and Lucky Strikes and a substantial cash haul from a desk drawer and cash register. No food was stolen. The break-in happened between ten and nine o'clock. entry was gained by breaking a rear door panel and the suspects fled through a novice door.

Indoor Fox Hunt in Washington Captures Live Fox

Four men and a dog attended the unusual indoor fox hunt in Washington. Bill Roberson gave Humble Produce a live fox pup, which escaped from a cage and roamed the Humble premises for two weeks. Clayton Lintz arrived with his dog to help, and the fox was finally captured alive and presented to Lintz as a reward for his efforts.

Jesse H. Campbell aged 64 died at home after long illness. Funeral at 2 pm Saturday at the 4th A. Jones funeral home with Dr. Fred Miller officiating. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. He was born Sept 9 1883 near Washington and survived by wife Emma B Rittenhouse and children, stepchildren, and many relatives. He lived on a Lexington area farm before moving to Washington and worked for Martins Cleaners. He was an Odd Fellows member.

Death of Mrs. Mary Beggs Succeeds at 59 in Washington

Mrs Mary C Beggs 59 of 107 East Seventh street died at 6 0 yesterday at Washington county hospital after months of illness and a Mercy Hospital Iowa City surgery. Funeral services are set for 3 30 Saturday at the Methodist church. She was born August 18 1888 in Washington and married William C Beggs in 1912 who died in 1943. She helped operate a Washington grocery and led the county and district Republican women's clubs. Surviving: son William Clifford Beggs two granddaughters Luna Jean Mary Elizabeth Beggs of Goodland Kansas two brothers Charles and David Clendenning and two nieces.

Washington troopers deployed to Waterloo riot duty

Troopers from Washington Iowa National Guard join 15 other units on strike duty at the Rath packing plant in Waterloo. Captain Snyder ordered 15 men under Lt Wayne Simerman Jr to Waterloo, with 56 Washington guardsmen available. The force arrived by half track and two jeeps, armed with machine guns rifles carbines sub machines and bayonets.
