Marty Norton once hailed as a prison riot hero and salesman of $800 a month returns to court after pleading guilty to fraudulent use of the mails. He was convicted for selling unauthorized magazine subscriptions to rural customers and faces 18 months in prison in a February 1936 sentence by Federal Judge George C. Scott. Norton claimed to be financing his college education.
Mrs. Glenn peer of Bloomfield died when two cars collided at a Y intersection five miles west of town. Her husband, a retired farmer, had severe cuts. In the other car were three Ottumwa youths returning from Missouri with Richard Keasling injured from a finger wound. Deputy Sheriff Glenn Weede said Jess Flack, accused driver, was taken into custody.
Lestervenson, 44, is jailed in Black H county on forging an endorsement to his mother's old age assistance check. Police say the mother moved to Vincibford and failed to notify the office, so the check was sent to her Waterloo address where the son allegedly cashed it. The amount was $25.
Mrs Pauline Covich aged 70 died at Broadlawns General hospital from burns after her clothing caught fire from a heater in a second floor bathroom. Alberta Lunn age 18 saw the blaze through a window, entered the home, grabbed a bus and rolled it over Mrs Covich to extinguish the flames.
Invitations went to over 400 schools across Iowa Wisconsin Minnesota Illinois and North Dakota for a statewide marching band defense clinic at West Waterloo High School and Sloane Wallace Stadium. West Waterloo bandmaster Ralph Pronk says the event, likely the first of its kind, will unite high schools universities and U S army officers to advise on updated marching band tactics.
Edith Lb Morris a 28 year old nurse at a veterans hospital was found dead in a rental cabin at a tourist camp in Des Moines. Coroner Dr J W Bailey ruled death from a sedative overdose and said she left a note to her parents Mr and Mrs Frank Livingston Manning stating she planned suicide fearing a nervous breakdown.
Des Moines remembers James Cavender 73 former police chief once noted for a fiery temper and tough law enforcement. He died at his home after years of nervous illness, having resigned in 1926 after a three year tenure and becoming a storm center for vigorous campaigns against vice and laxity.
Washington county selective service board mailed 100 more of 2200 men ages 21 to 35 the 501st to 600th order numbers. The forms will be returned for classification as larger consignments and more frequent mailings are planned to meet expected army training needs.
Nearly 300 veterans work at the United States Veterans Facility in Des Moines on the poppy industry restarted December 1, 1940. Veterans earn pay every Friday based on weekly production, supervised by veteran Charles D. Coleman. By year end about 660,000 poppies are expected for Iowa and other states, totaling roughly $6,500 in income for participants.
Twenty three club members and parents joined a Jackson 4-H club tour from 1 to 5 pm visiting A. L. Duensing farm and Ray Sojka farm. Leaders John Knotek Lloyd Marek and J. W. Chandler oversaw project inspections discussion of feeding and gain rates. Members detailed dairy calves baby beeves market litters and purebred stock at each stop.
DES MOINES May 17 Wendell L Willkie won applause at the Iowa Young Democrats convention as former state Representative James E Irwin Boone lauded him for burying partisan politics after the campaign and backing President Roosevelt s foreign policy John Moon Ottumwa defeated Joel S McGlade Waterloo for permanent chairman with chief interest in intra party dynamics.
Needy veterans in the facility will receive aid as organizers announce Poppy Saturday on May 24. The event aims to raise funds and support veterans in care.
DES MOINES May 17 124th Iowa aviation squadron of the National Guard stationed at Des Moines municipal airport comprises 142 enlisted men and 31 officers Major Lester G Orcutt of Des Moines commands. Washington May 17 President Roosevelt called eight more National Guard aviation squadrons infantry battalions and a coast artillery battalion to active service with induction dates to be set soon. The 124th aviation observation squadron of Iowa is among units named.
Cheyenne Wyoming May 17 union pacific officials investigated a fire in the road yards that destroyed the locomotive and machine wheel shop. Superintendent Gogerty and division head Wedge declined to comment on a suspected cause while Omaha president Jeffers told Cheyenne fire chief the blaze likely originated from arson and saboteurs may be involved.
A midair collision of two army planes near RAINS S C kills four fliers. In politics the session centers on a three way race for national committeeman with Representative Sewell Allen Onawa and James France Tipton as leading contenders and L F Thomazsin Dayton as a possible compromise choice.
The Cairo dispatch reports British forces advancing in western Egypt near Sollum drove back two enemy columns aided by tanks. The action followed the surrender of about 7,000 Italians and large materiel stockpiles in Ethiopia as the Duke of Aosta signed armistice terms at Amba Alagi. Mussolini issued a decree redefining Croatian troops as part of an allied kingdom.
Iowa state championship quiz derby for elementary schools will be held at the Iowa State fair August 22 29. Washington county will have a team from four townships Jackson Cedar Lime Creek and Iowa. Names and alternates for each township are listed with supervisors plans, 7th and 8th grade pupils, public sessions and radio broadcasts noted. A grand prize and numerous prizes await the highest scoring teams.
Two Troop D members on furlough from Camp Bowig were in a car damaged in a highway crash on road 218 near the Johnson county line early Sunday. Francis J. Reed drove with Wayne Durst as passenger. They met a car in the center of the pavement. Reed swerved to the shoulder but was sideswiped and the other car fled. About $50 damage to Reed’s car. No injuries.
New York May 17 The Egyptian liner Zam Zam with 203 passengers and 120 crew sailed March 29 from New York to Alexandria via Recife and Cape Town. Up to 100 Americans feared dead including ambulance drivers and missionaries bound for Africa. British-American ambulance corps and families react as reports flag ship sunk by enemy action in the south Atlantic.
Three youths aged 15 to 17 escaped from the Davenport state orphans home and were picked up by a county highway patrolman. Sheriff H M Putnam faced a dilemma because state law bars housing juveniles with adults and Washington County jail has no segregation. Home officials promised to retrieve the boys, leaving the sheriff considering temporary custody options until then. Names given: Forrest Mayfield Boone LeRoy Burke Marengo Ellis Hensley Lamoni.

Grimm drowned in the Turkey river Appel drowned when his rowboat capsized in the Mississippi. Richardson Mrs Speer and Spinner died in traffic accidents.
