Sewing Room Aids Welfare With Corduroy Teen Girl Suits

The sewing room on the third floor of the court house employs eight women making bed linens dresses overalls and shirts for distribution to the needy. The recent standout is gray tan and haphazard corduroy teen girl suits with jacket and skirt. Mrs Jordan directs cutting with efforts to reduce waste. Over one hundred yards of material are cut weekly, scraps go to quilts for donation. Since February 10 1940 the workflow changed to task specialization with one woman sewing buttonholes.

Congress Sets Record Army and Navy Totals for Next Fiscal Year

A Senate appropriations sub committee set next year army spending at 1 827 491 724 dollars a peacetime high and a naval bill at 1 303 980 728 dollars raising total defense to 3 131 472 452 dollars for the year starting July 1 The same day National Guard camps may be canceled in eight states as guardsmen prepare for the fourth army maneuvers at Camp Ripley Minnesota for 21 days in August with regular army officers present

Miss Parker To Address Rural Pupils

Miss Jessie Parker state superintendent will address rural school pupils at the graduation. The eight grade class of about 116 to 120 from nearly 100 country schools in Washington county will graduate Friday May 31 at eight o clock in the Methodist church. Music by a rural school chorus of about 300 members is a prominent program feature.

Judge to Return June Third After Washington County Term

Judge J G Patterson of Oska loosa presiding at the March term of the Washington county district court plans to return to Washington for further sessions on June 3. He retired after completing court work ready to be transacted and jurors may be recalled if another jury case is tried.

Driving Licenses Granted to Eight Individuals

Driving licenses were granted to eight persons after yesterday's tests. Ten applicants failed and were refused licenses. Awardees include Everett Fehlberg of Wellman Francs Krummelhart of Riverside Mrs. Harry Satchell of Ainsworth Mrs. Howell Owens of Columbus Junction Jack Wilson Mrs. Paul F. Washington sewing project marks community work week

The sewing project begun here in Washington years ago now employs skilled seamstresses. The exhibit titled This Work Pays Your Community runs May 20 to 25 inviting the public to see the women at work and note the project’s benefits to workers and the community.

Des Moines Manufacturers Plan Three Day Southern Iowa Train Tour

A Des Moines group of about 60 manufacturers and jobbers will ride a three day special train through southern Iowa from May 21 to May 23. The itinerary includes luncheons and dinners in Atlantic Shenandoah Chariton Creston Ottumwa Washington and Oskaloosa with local chambers of commerce hosting guests from towns such as Anita Wiota Brayton Massena Walnut Lewis Cumberland Minden Griswold Clarinda Fairfield Ottumwa and many others. Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace urged grain exchanges to set today’s closing prices as a minimum to stabilize the market after declines. In telegrams sent after closing, he targeted wheat corn and oats with wheat ending at 7% conte.

Car Thief Suspect Held at Logan Iowa

Sheriff H M Putnam of Washington and Sheriff EO Tremmell of Sigourney travel from eastern Iowa to Logan to question Thomas Bell held on suspicion of stealing a car found abandoned near Cama Rubio. Bell had recent Keokuk county jail release and was seen near the Steinbeck garage before the theft.

French Hold Invaders 100 Miles from Paris

German forces breached Belgian Antwerp and pushed toward Paris as French premier Reynaud reshuffled his cabinet and Petain was recalled to bolster defenses. Reports said German units neared Paris while French and British efforts aimed to blunt the offensive along the Maginot line and Sambre Meuse sector.

Brighton Girl Wins Division Two Soprano at Regional

New Truck Line Approved Between Moines and Eldon

The State Commerce Commission granted Rock Island Motor Transit a certificate to operate truck and freight lines between Des Moines and Eldon and between Killon and Davenport. Routes include Davenport Muscatine Washington Brighton Fairfield and Killon with several intermediate points. Burlington and Milwaukee railways opposed the certificate.

Wheat market collapses again in Chicago trading
