Iowa City Al Sorenson of Ames Iowa was elected as next year’s president of the University of Iowa honorary senior men’s organization A F Ll.
Iowa unit of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers received a Class B certificate for the largest number of children receiving dental care during the 1987 health campaign. The rating was announced at the national congress meeting in Salt Lake City.
A Cedar Rapids man named Roy Crown, a seaman in the U S Navy since 1934, stayed ashore on a 40 hour pass in London. Immigr ation officials arrested him after he told them he entered the United States on a 40 hour pass three years ago and failed to return to his ship. He had just been released from Anamosa reformatory where he served a larceny term.
Delta Gamma sorority at the University of Iowa completed the full payment of its $40,000 chapter house bonds. The 1923 building, whose bonds would mature in 1942, was retired four years ahead of schedule during fitting ceremonies and a formal dinner.
Mason City Illinois Reuters reports that two tire changers were injured when a heavy truck rim blew off during maintenance in the southwest part of the city. Mason City man Fred Bitterman, 29, suffered a fractured skull and broken nose, while FFR Turnbull, 60, sustained severe head cuts and a possible skull fracture.
Knoxville Marion County treasurer L F Bousquet says state checkers uncovered a $1,000 forged warrant on the Dallas school district fund. The warrant, made out to cash, shows an issuance date July 21, 1937 and payment July 20, 1937. A former office employee recalled handling the warrant but did not remember who obtained the money.
Ottumwa reports Francis Johnson, president of the Iowa Taxpayers association and Iowa Farm Bureau, says during a state sponsored meeting that taxes last year were higher than food costs and public debt rose nearly as much as clothing expenses.
Former Iowa senator L J Dickinson accuses incumbent Guy M Gillette of selling oat bag and baggage to the New Deal in a speech prepared for a political meeting in Iowa City. Dickinson, a Republican candidate, says Gillette deserted colleagues in the court fight.
Des Moines Chief W W Akers of the state bureau of investigation has been passing counterfeit half dollars in routine trades. He pays with a half dollar, accepts change, then asks for the coin back claiming it was stolen from W R Starling of Perry, alleged counterfeiter of fifty cent pieces.
Cedar Rapids officers report 3 year old Joan Shadle daughter of Mr and Mrs John Shadle was struck by a car driven by Emmet Evans age 23 as she darted into the street near her home. Doctors say the outcome for her sight will not be known for three days after skull fracture was sustained.
President Roosevelt submitted a special message calling for a joint Senate and House study to craft a national policy on production and conservation of phosphate. He warned exports drain the supply, especially in Florida and Tennessee, with much of the known phosphate on government land and rapidly diminishing private reserves.
Capt Clyde V Bell regular army cavalry officer from Kansas praised Troop F 213th Cavalry for a fine showing in their annual inspection. Despite wet weather several new members joined this spring and most of the 14 man troop attended. Horses stables records and equipment were rated in fine shape. visiting officers from Iowa City Siourney Oskaloosa and Washington joined the event with dinner at the North Side cafe.
Des Moines May 20 The executive council held a special session on a rift between Governor Kraselfel and State Treasurer Leo K Wegman. Attendees including Wegman refused comment as to whether the split could be bridged. The dispute concerns 125000 against six out of state corporations dropped by the council.
Mr and Mrs Paul R Horak will travel to Sioux City on Sunday to attend the state convention of the Knights of Columbus.
Ralph M. Smith announced that the Mrs C W Stewart store room on the west side of the square, once the Over soa seed shop, has been leased by Spurgeon Mercantile Co of Chicago to open a department store in Washington by late summer. The space will receive a new front, fixtures, redecorating, a new floor, and rapid improvements.
Dr. Malaku Bayen a native Ethiopian prince and physician to Emperor Haile Selassie will give a moving picture lecture on Ethiopia at United Presbyterian Church next Wednesday May 25 at 8 oclock. An offering will aid Ethiopian refugees. He also speaks at the men of the church meeting after a 6:30 potluck.
Phil Crail of Columbus Junction was a visitor in Washington today, stopping to meet officials and discuss local matters. He greeted residents and posed for photos near the Capitol.
President Roosevelt says he takes no part in state contests including Pennsylvania and Oregon. He notes his cabinet promotes New Deal favorites but he remains neutral as Gov. Charles E. Martin faces Senator Henry Hoss in Oregon. John L. Lewis attends a White House luncheon, claimed not to have political significance.
Washington high school marching band drivers and chaperons head to Minneapolis with plans to stay at the Radisson hotel. The group earned a superior rating at the state contest and will perform in the regional marching band contest starting at three. It may be late afternoon or evening before results are known as several bands compete in the same class.
The Washington county board of supervisors announced Miss Martha Foster will lead poor relief, succeeding Miss Helen Creswell who resigns to head WPA women’s projects in Des Moines. Foster, a former case worker in Marshall and Woodbury counties, begins by June 1 after a final familiarization with Creswell, who praised her qualifications and regret the departure.
Miss Ethel Grecian, county auditor, announced that absent voter ballots are ready and may be voted next Monday by those away from home on election day or unable to visit polls. Applications may be filed now for those confined to homes, with ballots furnished under usual conditions. If Washington County is residence but not in the county on election day ballots may be applied for and forwarded.
Rains continue in Washington county keeping soil moist and delaying corn planting. Early shower brought about a tenth of an inch. Forecast calls for more rain later today or tonight with no break in the series of showers. Yesterday's high reached 85 degrees and the low 61 degrees.
Hundreds attend the funeral of Dr I C Boice at United Presbyterian Church with Rev. William J. Nichol Jr presiding. The service features vocal duets by Carolyn Hamilton and Mrs Hugh We Cleery and honors from groups including the American Legion and Veterans organizations. Pallbearers included A E Sands Lester Orr Earl Lemley James Davis James Boyd and Milford McCreedy.
Mr and Mrs Fred Downing Mr and Mrs Fred Bey John Lemmon George Mohr and Nic McCleery attended the second annual Boy Scout appreciation dinner at the Memorial Union in Iowa City last evening.
Miss Grecian reported a total of 12,510 ballots printed with 7,795 Republican 2,770 Democratic and 1,945 Farmer Labor ballots. The figures detail party distribution among the prepared ballots.
London reports European tension eased as France withdraws some demands in Spain. Italian and French forces ready near African fronts while Italo French talks for a friendship treaty near collapse. France makes unspecified concessions on the volunteer question in Spain.
Rollie B. Nelson of Fairfield was arraigned before Justice J. B. Bovee, waived preliminary hearing, and was ordered held in the county jail on two charges. He faces operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and illegal possession of intoxicating liquor with bonds set at $500 each. Nelson was arrested Wednesday night by Policemen Walt Kiesey and Mark Pratt.
Farmers in southeastern Iowa counties plan protest meetings over the 1938 farm act. A meeting is set for tonight in Burlington and another for tomorrow night in Mt. Pleasant. Mt. Pleasant farmer Walter Rohde leads the movement citing concern over Secretary Wallace's authority.
Iowa City May 20 J J Lavell veteran journalism professor at the State University of Iowa announces retirement from teaching. A faculty member since 1924 he will devote his time to writing and nature studies in which he has long been interested.
Des Moines reports two men were attacked and robbed near a beer tavern as they left early today. John Behan and Douglas Carapaca sustained minor injuries. Carapaca’s high powered 1938 car was stolen and found two blocks away. Suspect Karl Chandler, 23, of Des Moines, held by police.
Boice served as physician at births for several men. At Elm Grove cemetery a firing squad from Troop F, 113th Cavalry, fired a volley as a final tribute to an old soldier. The squad included Sergeants McDoll and Dodd, Corporals Embree, Mitchell, Hysell, Brock and James and Private Kerr.
