Tragedy in New Sharon as boy drowns in river
In New Sharon two frightened boys admitted that their chum Jackie Van Gorp ten drowned in the swollen North Skunk River while attempting a forbidden swim. Nearly all town men hunted for two hours for the body. Jackie was the son of P G Van Gorp the school janitor. His playmates were Jerry Thompson and Bobby Sexton sons of local families.

Well that Whistles Like Steam Engine Opens on Farm
A whistling well has opened on the George Miller farm near Red Oak drawing crowds. Digger S. H. Patterson for 40 years says he never saw such noise, which resembles a steam engine and can be heard for about 69 rods. Geologist H. T. Hershey of Iowa City visited to investigate, suggesting a ground hump as a possible cause and predicting it may eventually bail out.

Pairfield man held for drunken driving in county jail
Rollie B. Nelson of Pairfield is jailed in Washington county awaiting a hearing on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Police say he used a large portion of the street, had trouble walking after the stop on East Main near the square, and carried part of a liquor bottle. Charges to be filed today with a preliminary arraignment possible this afternoon. Nelson previously faced a forgery charge in March, dismissed when no bill was returned.
