Des Moines Governor George A. Wilson asked Gen. John M. Rankin for a legal opinion on who has authority to select Iowa's official visor seals. This action marks the fourth move in a seal controversy since May 6 when the state printing board awarded a 12 million seat contract the liquor control commission opposes to the highest bidder.
In St. Paul Minnesota Tipton earned more first places at the national high school music festival than any town of comparable size. Proud parents celebrate the town’s success and record a historic achievement.
Glen Beman reports the General Drivers union filed charges with the national labor board against Roberts Dairy Co in a dispute involving A F L sympathizers barred from picketing Piggy Wiggly stores in Sioux City. Delmar Clark arraigned on railroad wreck attempt charges in Des Moines he admits placing ties on tracks but denies intent to wreck the train.
William Yareho about 60, a farmer north west of Shell Rock, was killed by a dynamite blast in a field. He relit the fuse on a previously fired charge and the explosion occurred as he returned to the charge.
Des Moines reports that the Iowa attorney general and assistant say a husband’s jail sentence does not by itself prove wife abandonment. The opinion arose during a query about whether a wife may return to her hometown and seek relief if her husband is sent to a board of control institution.
Burlington reports two elderly roomers were rescued from an upper story fire at Mrs Martha Hobbs’s brick house. Charles Bergeman, about 80, in bed with a broken hip, and Clem Dworcack, 79, were carried to safety from an upper window.
Des Moines Electric Light Co. adopts safeguards against sabotage. President C. A. Leland says yard lights are posted, fences manned, passes required for all visitors at generating plants southeast of Des Moines and downtown and at the gas works.
A two-vehicle collision occurred five miles north of Washington on highway No 1 involving a Linby driver K L Y Brown and a Mose Levy owned truck driven by Joe Levy 25. Damages totaled about 196 to the car and 25 to the truck with four passengers in the car and two in the truck unharmed. Levy faced a warrant for failing to yield half the traveled right of way and was to be arraigned in Justice of the Peace J E Bovee's court.
First Sergeant Rudolph W Knottnerus issues a revised roster for Troop D, 1st Cavalry, at Camp Bowie Texas. The unit now lists 143 men with 15 more to reach 158, adding 24 draftees from Iowa and Minnesota inducted March 13. The roster details roles, duties, and positions across headquarters, supply, motor officer, car crews, radio operators, scouts, and mechanics with numerous named personnel and assignments.
In central Ohio during a violent storm last night at about 8 30 two Army planes crashed killing seven fliers. Five bodies were recovered from Sand Run in Hocking county after one ship hit a hillside. Two more died on a farm near Martinville in Montgomery county. The craft were believed to be bound for Wright Field near Dayton.
Twelve people passed the driving tests conducted by State Highway Patrolman Cummings yesterday and received licenses. Five failed to pass, while one instruction permit was granted. Licensees include Joe A. Hoffman Otis Yoder Henry A. Kauffman William L. Houseal Effie H. Caldwell Violet Irwin Donald W. Klein Florence Misher Freddie Brown Percy Moses John A. Riley Jr Albert M. Beese and Floyd W. Helmer received a chauffeurs license.
High school home economics students hosted an open house from two to four showing sewing room displays, scrapbooks, and handwork. About 75 students across the three year course guided guests and presented projects, furniture refinishing, and a baby care bassinet.
The first annual Citizenship Recognition Day in Washington drew modest turnout but featured Jordan N. Larson of Dubuque as speaker and the presentation of certificates by Fred Downing. Supt. F. E. A. Ralston presided at the high school program urging new citizens to study American history, current events, personal responsibility, and future possibilities.
The Washington county selective service board announces call No. 13 for one man. Samuel Collin McCleery of Washington is named to report Wednesday May 28 at 6 1 morning for one year of Army training at Fort Des Moines. Order number 249. Washington county has sent 20 men who have been accepted and are in training. three more are under call with two replacements to depart May 21 for failed physical tests.
A dairy week observance in Washington County from June 9 to 14 will crown a Cow Queen and end with the cow giveaway. The Dairy Industries committee organized at a Farm Bureau meeting and named Hayes as chairman, Tweeten publicity chief, and Libe finance head. Iowa Dairy Commission official J Richard Heise outlined funding from a butter fat tax to promote dairy products locally and in eastern markets. The plan includes a wide publicity push and several novelty events to boost dairy sales and local revenue. An additional meeting is planned soon.
Edna Shaffer served as announcer at the event. Elaine Thomassen Genesa Payne and Juanita Wallace modeled pajamas. A long list of women wore play suits slacks sport dresses and dresses. Betty Ward showcased a home made housecoat and Margaret Ragan wore a red dotted swiss summer formal.
Berlin reports say Rudolf Hess remains a troublesome guest for Great Britain and Germany nears another strike against the empire. British forces clash with Axis in the Near East while Libya fronts and Basra battles unfold. Unconfirmed reports link Palestine skirmishes to raids on Syria.
Irgil Bayne ground school supervisor of the Civil Aeronautics Administration of Des Moines conducted tests on Civil Air Regulations navigation and meteorology for ten members of the Washington Junior College pilot training class. Dean Harland Mead announced flight training at the airport will resume next week.
The CCC corn in steel bins in Washington county totaling about 180000 bushels is offered to farmers and feeders at 65 cents per bushel or the local market price whichever is higher. Purchasers may buy as little as 100 bushels or arrange to purchase an entire bin. Inspecting before purchase requires permission from the county AAA committee. Some borrowers have paid off loans on stored corn and may redeem 1938 or 39 corn at about 60 to 66 cents per bushel depending on loan term.
