Edwin C. Hess of Rock Island reports his toaster was involuntarily toasted by a bolt of lightning at 4 20 Sunday afternoon. Fuses blew and the house suffered no damage beyond the toasted slice. Hess said the bread was too brown and too crisp as the only complaint.
A district court jury found William Ulrich, 40, guilty Monday night of placing strychnine in sugar with intent to injure his in laws, Mr and Mrs Luke Aswegen, farmers near Eldora.
The H C Houghton bank begins operations with a state charter and 60,000 capital and surplus. President H C Houghton Jr. remains in charge as offices open at Stanton and Elliot, areas lacking banking facilities for years.
Jim Smith 35 of Centerville a lineman for the Iowa Southern Utilities Co died after his body touched a high voltage line at Numa Iowa southwest of Centerville. The accident occurred late Monday afternoon.
Des Moines reports 133 fatalities for the year so far with four additional Iowans fatally injured in automobile accidents during the past week.
In Elkader authorities charged six persons with murder and vowed rapid progress within 24 to 48 hours in the investigation of the slaying of Dan Shine, a 60 year old farmer.
Union plumbers in Cedar Rapids walked out after employers rejected demands to raise the wage scale from $1.20 to $1.25 per hour and improve working conditions. No large construction jobs are affected, with conferences continuing toward a settlement.
The State Bureau of Investigation reported 151 automobiles stolen in Iowa during April with 98 recovered, indicating a continued theft concern in the state.
The annual memorial church service for Civil War veterans and allied groups will be held May 31 at the Presbyterian church during the usual morning service. Pastor Dr. F. W. Rome May 19 Italian premier Mussolini announced a major expansion of the armed forces, enlisting all fascists aged 21 to 55 in the Black Shirt militia. About 600000 men are affected by the plan.
At yesterday's joint Rotary and Y's Men's clubs meeting the Washington club was named leading in the international rating for efficiency including attendance programs and sponsorships. The Midwest region including Iowa won the regional contest, leading the Pacific region by six points. A Bennett trophy is awarded annually to the top region and to the highest rating individual club.
Guy Linville former United States district attorney and Republican senatorial candidate escaped serious injury when his car overturned near North Liberty Iowa after being forced off the road by bright lights. He suffered a bruised hip and was shaken but continued his speaking engagements.
John Florenza, 24, went on trial today for the April 10 strangling death of fiction writer Mrs. Nancy Titterton. He arrived at court from the Tombs in a blue serge suit, blue shirt, and blue tie.
KEOSAUQUA Iowa May 1 state senator John N Calhoun won local backing for the republican nomination in the first district. Joe M Barker Van Buren county chairman said the endorsement reflects voters in the county and the citizens of the area.

Superintendent K A Ralston announced no admission charge for the high school and junior college commencement on May 28. An amplified public address system will broadcast the events at the Methodist church with overflow seating in the basement. Dr D W Moorehouse of Drake University will speak at commencement, and Dr B F Schwarts has the baccalaureate address. The year’s graduates are expected to be the largest yet, justifying extra seating and facilities.
Guttenberg Iowa May 14 41NS A loss of more than 40000 to the 2000000 dollar cofferdam on the Mississippi river caused by the dam breaking under strong water. Four acres inside the structure flooded and valuable machinery submerged as the dam neared completion.
The Y s Men and Rotary in Bangkok hosted Walter Zimmerman national secretary of the Y M C A in Siam who spoke on Siam history people and potential. He noted Siam could supply the world with rice with modern methods and highlighted mineral resources. Visitors included Rev W B McCrory of Artesia New Mexico.
R. McCutchen on behalf of the Commercial Savings bank trustees distributed dividend checks to depositors under district court orders. About half the bank’s deposits were paid earlier, leaving roughly $70,000 in total to be distributed from the trusteeship funds.
Funeral services for Mrs. Clyde M. Maxwell, who died yesterday at the county hospital, are set for two o clock Wednesday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home. Rev. Thomas Osborn of Wellman Methodist Church and Rev. D E Zimmerman of Crawfordsville United Presbyterian Church will conduct, with burial in Crawfordsville cemetery.

Betty Jean Snakenberg won best poster and will enter the state contest. judges were Mrs H C Hull and Mrs P L Etter.
Mexico City May 19 1946 the nationwide railway workers strike ended within seven hours. The walkout began last night and was called off at 12 01 a m with workers told to return to work at noon. President Cardenas was advised the strike ended. About 40000 employees will resume duties at twelve o clock today.
Des Moines report shows the state beer permit board revoked 63 licenses in its first year. About half were surrendered voluntarily, others revoked after local action. Board had power to procede licenses when authorities failed to act, but not needed. A total of 5 575 licenses at 3 dollars each were granted during the year.

Rev. W. B. McCrory formerly pastor of the United Presbyterian church in Ainsworth visited friends in the community yesterday and is now located in Argona.

Community leaders including Mrs. Luithly Mrs Gleede Dold Rev J T Perkins and A Baldrige coordinate events in Wellman Riverside Richmond and West Chester with local clubs chambers of commerce and residents contributing pageants entertainment and surprises.
Judge Frank Beechly at yesterday afternoon's session ordered Clarence Dusenbery's parole revoked and a sentence of not more than five years to be served at the Amamosa reformatory. Dusenbery had pleaded guilty to cow theft Sept 23 1833 and the suspended sentence was revoked for violation including travel with Opal McCune and misconduct. Sheriff Putnam planned to escort Dusenbery to Attamosa this afternoon. Judge Rechly granted a divorce to Edna V. Nickerson and John A. Nickerson. This morning court to hear Bates vs Washington Loan and Trust Co regarding the Pattee trust.
The Republican state central committee in Des Moines announced a plan boosting delegates at large from counties for the July 10 convention. Counties will send 12 delegates at large plus one for every 250 Republican votes for governor two years ago, totaling 3 010 delegates the largest Iowa convention to date.
New Jersey voters went to the polls to choose delegates to the Republican and Democratic national conventions. Each party also selects a U.S. senate candidate, 14 members of the House, seven state senators and a full state assembly.
West Sixth Street residents told the city council they want a block surfaced with crushed rock and bituminous top. Officials say extra work this year, beyond last year's Horrabin contract, must be arranged by property owners. Other streets’ surfacing depends on the Horrabin crew’s schedule. about half of six miles under contract were done last year, with the rest to be completed this summer.
