A column notes that Iowa grasshoppers pose greater potential damage to farmers than chinch bugs. State entomologist Dr. Cc J Drake says the concern is serious and impacts agricultural planning across the state.
Washington Representative Kieher of Iowa recommends the appointment of Raymond W. Baxter to the Burlington Iowa postmaster position. The official nomination proceeds through federal channels and local approvals. Baxter would lead mail operations and clerk staff in Burlington.
Neighbors saw smoke billowing from a residence and found 76 year old Edward Lemans dead on a stove. The man appeared to have been burning a tire when the fire started.
Des Moines Sunday night contributions to the Oran Pape memorial fund totaled 876.35 dollars. The latest donor was Herman Senmeyer of Des Moines who contributed one dollar in memory of the state highway patrolman killed in a gun battle with Roscoe Baron on April 29.
Twenty one persons from the Sulyla farming community were baptized Sunday in the North Skunk river at Lynville Ila. They joined the Pilgrim faith after conversion during Evangelist Charles Platt's tabernacle meetings held there for several months.
Des Moines and Nebraska area Methodist Episcopal Bishop Frederick D Leete has retired from his post. The retirement was confirmed Sunday by Rev R M Bishman of Des Moines in a notice detailing the church leadership change.
The Iowa Federation of Business and Professional Women's clubs held a convention in Council Bluffs electing officers. Jessie Young of Shenandoah was chosen president with Helena Irwin of Des Moines as first vice president and Donia E K Smith of Iowa City as second vice president. Gertrude Fickenger of Mount Pleasant became recording secretary and Lena Nelson of Cedar Rapids was named treasurer.
The Des Moines based Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons elected Dr. John M. Woods as president with Paul O. French of Cedar Rapids named secretary treasurer.
Mrs. Stella Cruise of Atlantic Iowa died at nine this morning at the home of her son Dr M J Cruise 418 South Third street Washington She had come to visit and planned an Iowa City hospital operation for goitre but fell ill with heart trouble She leaves husband John Cruise son one brother Herbert Stoner of Oelwein Iowa Funeral plans are undeclared at Sherman’s funeral home

Ottumwa Iowa May 18 4INS eter Wagner a farmer west of Ottumwa reported that robbers stole a safe with 10000 in bonds and certificates while the Wag ners were away at a funeral between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon The haul included 2000 in bonds of the St Joseph hospital and 600 in liberty bonds Several suspects have been questioned.
Mrs Clyde M Maxwell of Wellman and formerly Crawford township died at the county hospital after weeks of illness. Surviving are her husband four sons and one daughter Delbert Paul Leland Verl Mrs Charles Strothman and several siblings. Funeral services will be held at Sherman's funeral home with burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Born Achsah Smith in Lafayette Indiana February 8 1874 she moved with family to Clark County Iowa and later Washington County. She was active in Farm Bureau 4-H and church groups.
Ethiopians mourn Valahu once a giant umbrella bearer for Emperor Haile Selassie who was shot by Italian firing squad for espionage and brigandry. He was reputed to be the tallest man in Ethiopia and served as drum major in the imperial band before the emperor fled.
Riots flared near Madrid today while two regiments of troops were held in readiness for an anticipated strike by building workers tomorrow in the capital.

Mrs Sam Witting Crawfordsville was in town shopping Saturday.
The Journal reports election boards appointed by the board of supervisors and ready for June 1 delivery. Absent voters may vote at the auditor’s office or ballot ballots home for ill or out of county voters. Ballots may be marked in the presence of a notary public.
In Washington D C on May 19 the district court of appeals divided over the $976 million housing program under the rural resettlement administration. The ruling involved Franklin township Somerset County New Jersey and a request to halt Hexford Tugwell from creating a model community within township lines. Justice Van Orsdell led the majority with Groner concurring while Stephens dissented. The panel found the model settlement would strip taxing real estate and burden taxpayers while expanding fire police and education services for over 4000 residents drawn into the project.
Miss Laura Einspahr the school nurse plans a general smallpox vaccination in June for children who have not yet been treated. Many younger students have never been vaccinated, and the effort aligns with public health measures to prevent this once‑devastating disease. Medical science has nearly delivered a knockout blow to smallpox.
Mrs Benjamin Franklin of Kansas will speak in Washington at 2 30 PM to address the first district Republican women’s meeting at city hall. She is described as an experienced speaker.
Poppy Day observance in Washington on Saturday May 23 with crepe paper poppies distributed by the Leon Beatty Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. Volunteers and “Poppy girls” will cover the business district and outlying centers to raise funds for disabled veterans and families of the dead. About 35 to 40 relatives gathered yesterday at the W N McCarty home for a family dinner honoring Mr McCarty on his seventy fifth birthday.
Mrs. Etta Parker aunt of Mrs. Chas. Palmer and former Brighton resident died at the Mary A. Coldren old ladies home in Iowa City at 6 15 Sunday evening after a long illness. Born September 19 1861 in Wayland she was daughter of T Arnold and Elizabeth Nicholson Arnold. She lived most of her life in Brighton apart from three years in Iowa City. She married Lem Parker in 1880, now deceased. Survived by one brother Co A Arnold of Brighton and several nieces and nephews she was active in the Brighton Methodist church. Funeral services Tuesday at 10 a m in Brighton with burial in Hillcrest cemetery.
The Y announces a 12 year old boy under its care and seeks a good home. Mr Soule says the boy should adapt well in a supportive home and be a helpful addition. Those interested can call at the Y to discuss full particulars and aim to place him within a few weeks.
Mrs Addie Shannon returns to Kansas City after spending winter with her daughter Mrs Larl Bickford. She traveled with Mrs Fay Brown who plans to visit Pueblo Colorado before moving on to Tucson Arizona to establish her home.
The Supreme Court declared the Guffey coal act unconstitutional, ruling government controls on coal production exceed constitutional authority. The decision divided justices Brandeis Cardozo and Stone dissented while Chief Justice Hughes favored upholding marketing and interstate commerce provisions. Justice Sutherland authored the majority.
George Shuppy aged 78 died Saturday evening at his home one and a half miles east of Germanville in Walnut township Jefferson county. He lived there most of his life except for a year in Kansas and was married to Ida Ries on March 2, 1886. Surviving are his widow and one daughter, Dora. Funeral services were at his home at 1:30 this afternoon conducted by Rev J L Seitzinger of the Germanville Lutheran church, burial in Union cemetery. Born September 2, 1857 to Chris and (Mrs) Shuppy.
London reported the British government urged King Edward to appoint a commission to inquire into Arab Jewish fighting in Palestine and the underlying causes of the racial unrest.
A late day storm damaged Clinton Iowa with high wind and hail. Night services moved to candlelight as wires were torn down. In Omaha and Council Bluffs eight people were injured as 66 mph winds drove hail drifts two to three feet deep.
Reports described a severe hail storm north of Riverside in the Hills area yesterday. Kalona and other northern parts of the county saw heavy rain, while Washington had only a light shower and no hail or strong wind.
