Visitors recall Charley Marshall who lived as a nearly naked, animal like resident at the poor farm. He died after refusing nourishment on Monday and was buried in Elm Grove cemetery by his brother George who cared for the remains.
A Boston newspaper recounts theater disputes involving Richard Mansfield Percival Pollard and Miss Fothergill rights. It notes claims of right to The First Violin and a failed Washington trip, with Mansfield denying the sensational attribution. Also reported is the formation of a Young Ladies Home Mission Society in M. E. church with 25 charter members and elected officers.
A letter to Major J. L. Glasgow from Gen. Wright notes that Muscatine Iowa City and St. Madison support bringing the encampment to our city. Wright and Col. Jackson favor it, pledging ground water and money. Securing the encampment would outshine a Fourth of July celebration and leave a favorable Washington impression. Glasgow is urged to push efforts.
Miss Jessie Myers of Kalona is the guest of friends in the city, visiting for a period of time.
A Burlington delegation of merchants arrived by special train and, after dining at Hotel Allen, toured local businesses and prominent buildings. Credit for the trip goes to BL & N. W. Manager R. Law and Passenger Agt. T. Dwight Ives.
Visitors from Columbus Junction Riverside Wellman and others attended a Royal Arch gathering last evening. The banquet room was decorated and guests praised the event as elegant entertainment. An Anti Saloon League organized Sunday at Lexington Methodist church with Rev. Smith pastor. officers elected Wm Runyon president, Mr Fleming VP, Lewis Gardner second VP, Mrs H B Gardner secretary.
Yesterday the Peters family rented farmhouse near Crawfordsville suffered a total loss when a woodshed fire spread to the house. Husband, wife, and nine children escaped with only their clothes and a little bed clothing. The fire leaves them in dire circumstances as renters. The notice also features a medical pitch for Hall's Catarrh Cure claiming a constitutional approach and a $1000 reward for cures. A separate item reports Mike Gilligan's hog sale to McCleery and Berdo ending with the seller forgiving $4 after the animal died.
Miller and Son announce a parlor lecture series by Rev. Thorn at Chas Keck’s home tomorrow evening while promoting a sale of new baby carriages at the North Side Furniture House Cras. This combines local lecture notices with aggressive furniture advertising and price emphasis.
The forecast notes showers and likely thunderstorms for Iowa with cooler air arriving in the western regions Thursday. In social news Mrs. A N Alberson hosted tea at her East Main Street home, with eight guests including Dr W Overholt W A Smith G Coffin H R Lacey N T Hendrix and J Whitney enjoying the elegant gathering.
Last evening at the haunted house grounds the Maxwelton Golf Club held a lively pre dine lunch after golf games. Joseph KR Strabalia of Richmond faced Justice Rogers this morning for the fourth time, charged with drunkenness, and was fined ten dollars with usual costs.
Johnson formerly of Galesburg HL will open a cigar factory in Washington next week. He is a first class hand worker and will make strictly hand work cigars. He guarantees fine cigars.
The University Center class met last evening at Mrs. S. W. teed's home as they near completing the history course and plan a literary course next. Friday evening special services will be held at the Seceder church to prepare for communion on Sabbath with Rev Masson assisted by Rev Ramsey of New Brighton Pennsylvania.
A crowded program promises a three hour life time of fun with a large circus and museum exhibits headlined by the Clevelands Jennie and John and trained dogs. May 21 features matinee 10c and evening 20c, with a balloon ascent and parachute drop after the parade.
