Washington May 18 Officials report insurgent cabinet and Aguinaldo in the mountains twelve miles north of San Lorenzo. A peace commission will seek terms. Representatives are already en route and officials believe final peace is assured.
Maria Boardman files in district court after the Chicago death of Henry E. J. Boardman. The will reportedly left all to a daughter, with 3,000 acres in Marshall and Story counties transferred by executor H. Boardman, subject to the widow’s dower. A major lawsuit looms over the contested estate value claimed at over $1,000,000. Mt Vernon hosts Cornell college music festival featuring Genevieve Clark Wilson in a three day program.
A nameless man was found unconscious in an old granary on the Whisker farm southeast of Nevada. He died despite medical attention and was buried in the potter's field. No identifying marks were found, though an old razor hung from a neck string. J Jones and twin brother John Jones of L Klein clothing were mentioned in the report.
May 18 The seven alleged revolutionists, who appeared as ordinary loafers, were arraigned in court charged with high treason and remanded for a fortnight. Affidavits claim 2,000 men were enrolled for military service to be armed in Natal and return to seize Johannesburg for 24 hours. One prisoner claims orders from the British war department. Government calls it an unfortunate local incident and notes near completion of talks between President Kruger and Sir Alfred Milner for a Bloemfontein meeting.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church Chicago district opened its annual conference in dollet Jolet Ms with Rev George W Gaines presiding. About sixty ministers and as many lay delegates attend. A paper on The Bible as Literature by Rev H S Graves stirred debate. Mayor Mount spoke to close the opening events as Sunday school matters take focus.
An explosion or debris strike in West Unty schoolhouse Tuesday night injures all twenty four occupants. Teacher Miss Flossie Fisher is severely hurt. Four children are fatally hurt Florence Marzoff Nettie Marzoff Lucy Marzoff and Roy Porton. Several others are dangerously or lightly injured with head wounds broken bones and gashes.
A cyclone swept Colesburg Iowa Tuesday night killing three people and injuring several others including two Tupper children reported not to survive. Damage spread to Littleport and along the Turkey river as authorities confirm victims George Lang Jerome Tacos and others.
Chicago officials launch the Baxter senatorial investigation into gambling and protection payments. Witness Schatner describes visits to Kenna’s saloon Manila club and other gambling rooms with Col. Brown, noting payoffs for protection. New York investigators report many pool rooms with little police interference and testify on Mayor Van Wyck’s associates.
A witness recounts paying police protection for fourteen years while running a poker room at Logan View hotel across from Logan monument. He named Tom McGinnis as the contact for protection and campaign fund shakedowns, and blamed him for gambling privileges in the downtown district. He also described opium dens and a city figure said to control profits, with ties to Alderman Kenna and Police Justice Martin.
Indianapolis May 18 Mayor Taggart arrived home with the remains of his daughter Florence Taggart lost with the Paul Jones. The body was found on Grand Gregier island in the Gulf of Mexico in remarkably preserved condition.
Great crowd attends the corner stone ceremony for Iowa's new historical building in Des Moines. Governor Shaw uses a silver trowel with Allison and Gear nearby as ex-governors Drake and Jackson, ex-Senator Harlan, John A. Kasson and T. S. Parvin present. Rotunda speeches by Harlan, Kasson, Shaw, and Aldrich highlight the event.

Russians increase activity at Port Arthur as dispatches outline potential British and English actions. An urgent plea from Kashgaria requests 15,000 men amid smuggling concerns.
London May 18 All London witnessed the royal procession for the foundation stone laying of the new South Kensington museum buildings. Queen Victoria rode in a four horse carriage, escorted by Prince Beatrice and the Prince of Wales, with guards and dignitaries present. The ceremony included an invocation by the archbishop of Canterbury and a brief royal reply. The queen then inspected the ceremony and departed for Windsor. Evansville Ind May 18 There is no truth to Terre Haute reports that southern Indiana mines would resume Tuesday. The operators still refuse to meet with United Mine Workers members.
