Riots in Hermosillo Prompt Army Stand Guard

In Hermosillo Sonora state troops with fixed bayonets secured the city after a mob of about 1000 supporters of Faustino Felix Serna sacked and burned his campaign headquarters. Police report one dead and 15 wounded as fighting flared since Sunday amid PRI backed governor candidate tension. Felix denied local needs were ignored by authorities sent from Mexico City.

Father testifies in disloyalty case of Ft Jackson captain

Seymour Levy, father of Capt. Howard Levy, told a court martial panel he raised his son as a loyal, good Jewish American who loathed the Vietnam War. The captain, head of the dermatology clinic at Ft. Jackson Base Hospital, faces charges of disobeying orders and making disloyal statements to soldiers bound for Vietnam.

Gun battle erupts at Texas Southern University campus

In Houston a night of violence at Texas Southern University left a rookie officer fatally wounded and multiple injuries. Police stormed dormitories after students fired rifles and shotguns, arresting near 500. Campus chaos included a major street bonfire and overturned cars.

Local Grants Offered to WHS Seniors on Commencement Night

Local scholarships totaling 4361 dollars will be awarded to Washington Community High School seniors at Commencement. Recipients are selected by school officials. several awards come from outside organizations, with specific amounts and criteria. Senate delays budget sparks warning in Des Moines

County group in appeal for youth summer jobs

The Washington Chamber of Commerce says it will help high school and college youth find summer employment. With no local employment office in Washington County CAP urges households and businesses to list opportunities with Chamber secretary Hubert Lehrer. The Youth Opportunity campaign is part of a nationwide effort, with 400,000 more 16 to 21 year olds expected to seek work nationwide. Mrs. Robert Day asks community agencies to be imaginative in listing openings, noting youths should gain constructive work outside their homes.

Summer reading program planned at Washington Public Library

Clarence the Bookworm invites kindergarten through fifth grade youngsters to a summer reading program at the Washington Public Library from June 5 to June 30. Daily sessions Monday through Friday 9 to 10 30 a m feature storytelling talks about books songs and poetry with Mrs Wayne Gamon directing and junior high volunteers assisting.
