Eisenhower Improves after Illness at Walter Reed
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower continues recovering from a stomach upset and is expected to return to his Gettysburg farm Friday. At Walter Reed Army Medical Center his spokesman said he had a good night, enjoys meals, and will complete a physical exam today. He was rushed to the center on May 6 with gastroenteritis. Embezzlement charge filed against county treasurer
H E Howell Washington County Treasurer since May 10 1944 has been charged with embezzlement by a public officer and has resigned. The shortage surfaced during a state auditor’s audit and Howell waived prelim hearing and was bound over to the grand jury. The office remains closed until a new treasurer is named and the books are audited. Bond covers up to 10000. if shortage exceeds bond all 99 Iowa counties may share in the loss. Howell released on own recognizance awaiting grand jury action.

Pass compromise on merit system in Iowa

Motorist robbed as he goes after gas
George Eastman of Waterloo reported he ran out of gas on the southeast edge of Waterloo. After buying gas and returning to his car, he found two men transferring about 500 dollars worth of household goods from his vehicle. They overpowered him and fled. he could not provide a description.
