Council approves sewer projects in Washington city

Washington city council approved two sewer projects including a storm sewer from South 12th Avenue to Paradise Drive and drainage from the south pumping station to Wayland road. They set June 5 at 8 p.m. for a hearing on street improvements, hired Mike Steele as pool manager and Milo Steele Jr. as assistant, budgeted 150.06 for a girls softball program, and ordered sidewalk restoration on South Avenue C.

1967 Iowa legislature could become longest and most costly

Des Moines reports the 1967 Iowa legislature, already on its 128th day, may surpass prior sessions in cost and length. By April the session had cost $1.3 million in salaries with the House at $825,000 and the Senate at $494,000. Legislators earn $40 daily and clerks $12.

Rescue Column Stalled At Con Thien Front

UPI reports North Vietnamese forces surrounding Con Thien repelled a Marine armored push to open a three mile supply corridor. Marines suffered 26 killed and 22 wounded over four days of heavy combat near the DMZ while Vietnamese units endured heavy losses. A separate Mekong Delta action saw 69 Viet Cong killed as US forces pressed the guerrilla stronghold near Saigon. Marines ultimately held near Con Thien amid mortar and ground fighting as both sides paid a heavy price.
