A severe rain and hail storm struck Bondurant, 15 miles northeast of Des Moines, wrecking windows and crops. No injuries were reported as farm workers failed to reach shelter and the school suffered over 500 broken panes on north and west sides forcing a two hour graduation delay until power returned at 9 15 P M.

Knapp F. Matthews city auditor and Waterlooo official urged Iowa cities over 6,000 population to study combining municipal parking lots with parking meters to attract downtown trade. He said larger towns provide such facilities, noting the farm trade benefits.
Henry C. Sapp 46 was found dead beneath an overturned tractor while hauling logs from his sawmill north of Eldora. A full dinner pail indicated he was working at the time. He is survived by his wife and four children.
Richard B Hull a radio specialist with the University of Minnesota extension staff since 1938 is appointed production manager of radio station WOT at Iowa State College effective July 1. He fills the vacancy from the departure of Andy Woolfries whose resignation was accepted by the state board of education.
Francis Crimmins, 21, granted parole from a forgery sentence to join the army was jailed again in Webster County on charges of stealing sealed corn. He was to depart for Fort Des Moines next Tuesday. Revocation of his eight month parole will be sought.
Darlene Thompson of Mount Ayr is listed in critical condition after a car driven by Ruth McWilliams lost control and hit her while she was walking home from school seven miles southeast of Mount Ayr. She suffers a broken leg hip injury and broken ribs and was taken to Creston hospital.
Mrs. E C Patterson, formerly Caroline Ness near Linn Grove, discloses a relation to Nazi official Rudolf Hess now in England. Her father the late George Hess was Hess’s second cousin, born in Zweibrucken Saar Basin Germany in 1856. Both Patterson and wife are American citizens.
Fort Des Moines will become a recruit reception center on May 25 to process Iowa draftees under the selective service act. Major Hall Bush will command the center with Major Orson Powers as executive officer, handling up to 1,000 selectives plus a 300-strong garrison.
Governor Wilson asks four members of the Iowa printing board to reconsider their acceptance of a bid by Consolidated Decal company Brooklyn NY to supply liquor seals. He notes the bid exceeds Iowa bid and cites prior satisfactory use of a different seal and concerns over the high price.
President Roosevelt disclosed a new civilian defense program that is wide in scope and may affect every man, woman and child in America. He indicated it is close to final approval in Washington on May 16.
Elementary and secondary students invited to view Land of Liberty on May 19 with matinees for younger grades at 2 30 pm in Fox theater. The 98 minute film, assembled by Cecil B De Mille, draws on scenes from many classic Western and historical films to illustrate American ideals from 1776 to today.
Des Moines May 16. Iowa has spent 2245 of state funds to maintain its official lobby in Washington to attract defense industry. Fred Porter, state comptroller, reported today. The 1941 legislature appropriated 50000 to a 15 man state industrial and defense commission. Of this sum 10000 was earmarked for the first four months to July 1, thereafter 20000 a year.
Firemen answered six o clock call to the J and Moore place a mile northwest of town where a barn struck by lightning burned. Mud hindered the Farmers Mutual truck but the blaze was quickly controlled with slight damage. At 10 45 last night firemen were summoned to the Maidrite sandwich shop where a motor in the basement was on fire but no spread occurred and damage was confined to the motor.
The four printing board members Attorney General John M. Rankin Secretary of State Earl G. Miller State Auditor C. B. Akers and Walter Sharp Burlington endorsed the decision. Tom Purcell of Hampton as fifth member voted against adopting the high bid.
Mrs. Fred Downing, president, announces Poppy Day on May 24 across Iowa and the nation to raise funds for World War II veterans. Poppies are handmade by veterans at Des Moines VA facilities, with 85 veterans employed and paid per flower.
President Roosevelt said freedom of the seas is an historic American policy and Germany's Red Sea blockade claim tests its feasibility. In a brief press conference he called the international situation grave, would not answer hypothetical questions, and declined to discuss possible action under the Havana Act regarding Martinique or other French possessions.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox expressed the personal view that Rudolf Hess fled Germany “two jumps ahead of a gunman” and is sane. He told reporters in Chicago that Hess is the target of public scrutiny and that, like others there, he doubts Hess’s insanity.
A violent electrical storm swept through Washington county last night around ten o clock producing .60 inch of rain. Thunder and lightning were frequent with hail reported north of town. no further damage details available.
In Mahaska County Iowa a board of six appraisers will determine damages for a 59 foot wide strip across the Browneller farm in Spring Creek township on May 20 as part of a test case on the 1933 pipeline condemnation act. Attorney J L Devitt says settlements exist on most parcels but actions may continue.
Severe hail caused damage followed by rain and lightning. Temperatures plunged 23 degrees in roughly an hour after a high of 92 degrees yesterday afternoon. The night low was 60, and at 10 am today it was 65 with cloudy skies.

British forces launched air strikes on German positions in French Syria and pressed a rapid advance to recapture Sollum, Hassaya Pass, and Mu Said in Libya while inflicting heavy losses. German command acknowledged the attack with few details as RAF and Syrian frontier tensions rose.
The Washington county Red Cross sewing room opened at city hall with over fifty women tending the open house. The room will be open 1 to 5 pm on Tuesday through Friday, with twenty four women taking work home. The committee seeks more hours and a loaned clock, noting registrations from Keota Kalona Ainsworth Crawfordsville and rural Washington.
In Audubon a fight left Del Lowers 57 wounded and possibly losing an eye. Bob Feltner 55 is jailed after the incident, and Berg Henricksen shared a small house with the two suspects.
