President Coolidge will not call an extra congressional session over the Mississippi flood. White House aides say rescue and reconstruction progress is sufficient to meet needs, as a special convention of state and city officials plans June in Chicago to discuss further action.
The Strawberry Point Press notes Lee Trezona resigns as Littleport superintendent to lead the consolidated schools at Ainsworth Iowa, in a promotion praised by locals. Keota High School captured the Keokuk County track and field title at South English with 57 points, beating Keswick 42.5 and Delta 38 as Richland, South English, Kinrons, Webster, Hedrick also competed. The school earned a red and white banner for the victory, the second this year after the football team’s county title. coach Vern D. Landers praised the effort and basketball is planned to join athletics next year.
IOWA CEPY May 17 The Johnson county highway project from Iowa City to the county western boundary is three weeks from completion with three days of concrete pouring setting a record. Weather has hindered spring work with nine hundred feet poured yesterday and prospects for steady sun this week. Concrete on US 161 toward Linn county paving nears finish linking Iowa City and Cedar Rapids by an all concrete road across eastern Iowa.
Civil War veterans living in Washington will be guests of the high school seniors during the class play The Copperhead to be performed next Tuesday and Wednesday May 24 and 25. I. G. White post G A R invited veterans at today’s meeting and most are expected to attend. Seats go on sale Saturday at Phillips Hebber drug store. non veterans pay 35 cents while Civil War veterans receive free reserved seating.
Edna Young Graves pleaded guilty to operating an automobile while intoxicated and was sentenced by Judge H. Kelley to one year at the Rockwell City Women’s Reformatory. Her sister Fay Young Surrey pleaded guilty as an accessory and received the same sentence, suspended for good behavior, parole given to Sheriff I. A. Saddler.
Mrs Alfred Johnson won a prize for naming the new lunch room opened by A Baker and son on Mast Washington Street. After about seventy five suggestions the name Bakers Ideal lunch was selected. The restaurant opened Saturday May 14 and has enjoyed splendid morning trade.
More than 800 Iowa club women gathered in Davenport for the seventeenth biennial convention of the state women’s clubs opening today. Mrs. John Hammill, wife of the governor, arrived and is among prominent guests. Governor Hammill plans to join weekend attendees. Speculation grows on the presidency with Mrs. William l christ rumored as a candidate to succeed Mrs. John of Shenandoah.
