A six year old boy placed a spike on Big Four rails near Lockland causing a train wreck that killed Mrs. Rose Earhart, 76, and injured five others. Detectives have the boy, who is with his parents as Big Four officials consider action.
The eighth grade pupils staged The Mysterious Master in the school auditorium to a large crowd. Mrs Freshwaters directed with student help, featuring costumed roles such as Rastus the housekeeper Joe the pirate and Sleuth and Gumshoe. The orchestra and choruses provided the musical support with costumes and set pieces crafted in school classes.
Vigilantes across eastern Iowa search for a dark green sport coupe bearing Iowa license 24315 believed used by three men who robbed the Ely Trust and Savings Bank of 2133 dollars. Norbert Janko bound, pistol drawn, safe rifled. getaway toward Cedar Rapids after two witnesses saw the suspects depart.
Funeral services were held at the residence on South Iowa Avenue at 2 30 pm for W. A. Attendance at Ascension day observances fell short due to two funerals of prominent men. Supt J H W Peet spoke at the Masonic temple and graves were decorated at Elm Grove and Woodlawn cemeteries. The dinner was canceled and the meeting continued with monthly business and Red Cross work postponed. Elliot Grayson, commander of Bethlehem command, led the day’s program.
The Washington Boosters will face Letts tomorrow afternoon at Libe Park. After three straight wins this season, the team has a full schedule ahead and Sunday’s game is set for 2 30 PM.
Iowa State College extension official W. D. Termohlen urges adoption of the egg grading plan to keep Iowa competitive in major markets. Iowa produces over 100 million dozen eggs yearly with two thirds sold in New York Chicago Boston and Philadelphia. Markets prefer uniformly graded eggs and Iowa's grading points have risen from 79 in 1927 to 234 in 1930, with expected doubling.

Firefighters were called to 421 South Avenuee for a blaze on the roof of a wound shed at Jarrard's home. The fire was contained and extinguished with only minor damage reported.
Washington county residents urge a small appropriation to cover expenses of a state inspector in fighting a disease affecting honey production. The club backs all possible aid to the honey industry and names I. Rothschild and Lewis Warren to meet the board of supervisors to discuss disease control proposed by Mr. Reif and Mr. Gingerich.
Postings from fourth and fifth graders in Centennial Wallace St James and Heights schools display in Nicola and Harmon bookshop west window. Prizes awarded to top posters include Virginia Stafford William Perdock Wreda Christner Martha Mace Ira Hindahl Ona Morgan and others with honors. Posters promote the May 23 poppy sale benefiting disabled veterans and war orphans.
In Beverly Hills on May 16 a speaker mocks George F. Baker for a failed investment and praises Calvin Coolidge for predicting the bust. The speaker likens Coolidge to Al Capone in foresight, suggesting many lost fortunes and little trust in other figures.
Kalona May 16 Kalona high school's senior class presented the play Seventeen to a full house last night. Supt H V Snodgrass directed the production with Shields orchestra providing music again tonight. Vernon Gingerich delivered a fine performance as a seventeen year old boy and William Silvanus Baxter, while Lola Pratt captured the silly girl role with wit and charm. Cast members included Margaret Sakulin Vira Marner May Parcher Helen Ginerovich and many others. Stanley Plank was stage manager and a white dog in a pink bow added much humor to the evening.
Central Park hosts a band concert at 8 p m featuring Colonel Bogey Moonlight and Rosacea Romeo selection Cope Concrates Gounod and a solo piece Just a Bit of Gos ar pees Rollinson Popular The Peanut Vendor Simons Go Home and Tell Your Mother Katinka and The Brazil Special Gus Davis conducts with several operatic and lighter numbers on the program.

A sheriff in Harlan county Kentucky reported a dawn raid on Evarts local United Mine Workers headquarters and a nearby house turning up I. W. W. materials and charter applications. Investigators plan grand jury action for criminal syndicalism while the membership book foreword calls for workers to take possession of production and abolish the wage system.
The board of education elected three new teachers to fill the coming year’s corps, with only three incumbents not signing contracts. Helen Coffey will supervise music at the high and junior high schools, Corrinne Martin becomes kindergarten teacher at Wallace and Heights, and Anita Tellin joins Centennial as a primary teacher.
Miss Helen Hamilton and Robert Hamilton of Grinnell visited friends today and returned with Miss Mary Welch Miss Ruth Ringheim and Miss Lena Stewart for a brief Grinnell visit.
