English River Floods Reach Farmlands in Washington County
The English River in northern Washington County rose again this morning, staying below last week’s crest but spreading floodwaters across farm fields and forcing road closures. Washington High School Band plans a final concert of the season on Thursday May 16 at 7 p.m. in Central Park, weather permitting, featuring marches, popular tunes, and award pieces from the state contest.

Iowa to remove red reflectors on highway rights of way
Iowa Highway Director Joseph Coupal announced that red reflectors placed at driveways on highway rights of way must be removed. A state audit of the Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Department shows 1973 net income from 199 stores and warehouses at 24.9 million dollars, up from 21.3 million the prior year. The Iowa City outlet led in total sales at 2.5 million with 800 thousand in operating profit.

Democrats move to end oil depletion allowance
House Democrats won a thundering voice vote to end the oil depletion allowance. The caucus approved cutting the 22 percent depletion benefit retroactive to January 1, aiming to raise revenue and raise oil taxes by about 1.8 billion dollars this year for oil companies and the Ways and Means bill.

Ma'alot school siege ends after Israeli raid
Israeli forces stormed a Ma'alot school building where about 75 children were held by Arab guerrillas demanding the release of 20 jailed comrades. Three militants were killed and about 10 people wounded as the four to six minute battle ended the hostage crisis before a 6 p.m. deadline.

House panel votes to subpoena 11 Watergate tapes
The House Judiciary Committee voted 37 to 1 to subpoena 11 more Nixon Watergate tapes and seeks diary entries for nine months in 1972 and 1973. Doar said the panel would later seek 40 breadfruit producer contributions tapes and 22 ITT settlement tapes. Hutchinson opposed further subpoenas.

Smokers Should Pay Medical Bills If Health Plan Enacted
Dr Stephen M Ayres proposes that a national health plan would charge cigarette smokers for all medical costs from smoking related diseases. He estimates about 11.5 billion of the 60 billion dollars spent on health care is due to smoking. The idea was presented at the American Lung Association meeting in Cincinnati where 2,500 doctors attended.

Keeler as administrator of Janice Marie Keeler’s estate seeks damages of $100,000 from Lawrence Deitrich Bartmann Betty Jean Bartmann and David Lawrence Bartmann over a 1972 auto accident near Ainsworth. The suit alleges negligence by the Bartmann trio and driver David in causing the woman’s death after a Highland High football game.

An 11 year old boy in Okeechobee Florida accidentally glued his left eyelid shut with super glue while building a model airplane. Doctors opened the eye surgically after the glue resisted compresses and eye drops. The boy was released after treatment and can see fine. The glue cyanoacrylate is not approved for medical use in the United States.
