Crowds gathered at Marr Park near Ainsworth for the annual Fish Day for handicapped children. The Izaak Walton League of Washington County sponsored the day as polite fishing fun with prizes and broad smiles despite sparse bites.

Civil Defense reports the Skunk River will crest Saturday at Brighton well above flood stage, with a projected crest of 155 feet as flood risks spike. Israeli warplanes launched two sweeping blows on Palestinian refugee camps in South Lebanon and Beirut outskirts in retaliation for the Maalot assault that killed 30 and wounded 87. The Washington County Hospital board debated moving or selling a 10.90 gallon emergency fuel supply stored since last winter. Dr J Michael Leary and wife Karolyn of Washington welcomed Keda Suzanne Leary born Wednesday not in hospital but in their car near Mercy Hospital Iowa City. The 5 pound 13 ounce girl arrived after a gas shortage halted the planned motorcycle ride to the hospital. The father recalls a chaotic race to hospital and says he would not recommend the method to other families. Grandmother is Amy Leary of Keota.

City police, county sheriff, highway patrol, and conservation officers earned ratings from sharpshooter to distinguished expert under Richard Stoops andDeputy Yale Jarvis also achieved expert status alongside several other officers and conservation staff.
