Mayor Harold L. Johnson announces a special meeting of the Washington city council at 8 30 a m Saturday to select furniture and equipment for the new administration building now under construction.
The official weather observer in Washington reported .71 of an inch of rain had fallen by 7 a.m. today. This includes the rain which fell yesterday and during the night Monday.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce organizes all day displays of National Guard and Army Reserve equipment on the square to observe Armed Forces Day. A military flag raising ceremony is set for 9 a.m. Saturday in Central Park.
Unemployment insurance payments to jobless Iowans in April fell to 3,050,044, down from 4,270,665 in March a 25 percent decrease. The commission cited sharp declines in construction manufacturing and transportation sectors with construction benefits dropping 43 percent and manufacturing 23 percent.
State Auditor Lloyd Smith charges the Iowa Employment Security Commission and the Department of Social Services failed to apply a uniform method for evaluating employment potential in the Work Incentive Program. He notes no statewide consistency in participant selection despite claims of careful assessments of work, training potentials and social services needs.
Partly cloudy and cooler tonight with lows in the mid 40s. Northwest winds near 10 mph. Wednesday remains fair and a bit cooler with a high around 65.
The House Judiciary Committee will vote at 9 a.m. Wednesday on subpoenaing Nixon tape recordings and related material including an April 4 1972 conversation with Haldeman and Mitchell. The panel reviews events leading to the Watergate break in with sessions slated three days weekly.
Police and sheriff units investigated numerous break-ins in county communities. Kalona saw cash stolen from Farmers Supply after a rear door break in. Washington area reported a lounge, school and radio office break-ins with small cash losses. KCII offered a $25 reward for the Kennedy Building basement intrusion with $200 in damages. Wellman saw three break-ins including Standard Station cash loss and the International Store thefts.
Washington Junior High held its annual awards day with Principal Richard Gipple and Assistant Principal Doug Dunlap presenting honors. Top scholastic averages were named for seventh through ninth grades, with citizenship awards given, and lists of 9th grade letters in football basketball and wrestling announced alongside certificates and managers for various activities.
Washington High School hosts the 1974 Fine Arts Festival Friday and Saturday May 17 and 18. Drama presents The Zoo Story The Jewish Wife Constantinople Smith and Gus and Fritz. Vocal groups perform Friday and Saturday. Instrumental Jazz Band also appears. Art displays include drawings prints sculpture ceramics and more. Directors are W. Carlton Bump Michael Kramme Robert Youngquist and Charles Shanks.
President Nixon proclaims May 15 as Police Memorial Day and designates Police Week. Washington area officers plan a Wednesday dinner at Captain 's Table with city police sheriffs and conservation officers. Awards will honor firearms course graduates and armory target workouts.
United Press International reports at least six tornadoes in Iowa with heavy rains and strong winds. Major damage included farm buildings in Cass County and the Hayes elevator near Grant, plus a destroyed Wayne Watson farm outbuilding. Multiple towns faced outages and blackout conditions in Johnston and Des Moines metro areas.
