Four Ottumwa banks will close at 2 p.m. on weekdays and at noon on Saturdays to comply with federal wage and hour law provisions. The changes take effect today, moving the previous 3 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. closures earlier.
Fairfield fireman Charles Allison was badly injured while battling a fire at the Mand ley Calhoun home which was destroyed. A chimney toppled onto Allison, injuring his leg and arm though his helmet protected his head and face.
Max Corrick age 24 earns enrollment in the U S navy school of music after passing required tests in Washington D C. Parents Mr and Mrs Ray Corrick of Boone were informed. Corrick has played trumpet since age ten and the school selects only 80 annually, making his honor distinctive.
Twenty one junior students at the University of Iowa were named to Mortar Board for women and AFI for men. Membership is based on outstanding campus leadership activities and scholarship. Announcement of Mortar Board members was the final event for Mother's Day weekend.
Thelkelds of Baxter, a juvenile hillbilly act, win first prize of 25 dollars at the Talicorn exhibit amateur show in Marshalltown. Roger Bacon of Marshalltown, a cornetist, places second for 15 dollars at the event. Ann Dirksen of Ames takes third prize as a tap dancer.
Herschel Slater of Hazleton Iowa State Teachers College keeps a diary not of himself but of a robin family nesting at the dormitory window. Slater and Bil lings Richards of Dubuque wait for the robins to hatch the eggs beside their room.
John Voss aged 63 died from injuries after explosion when he bent over a fuse he believed out on his rock blasting project at his Mason City farm. The blast tore his eye and badly ripped his face.
Des Moines reports state conservation director M. L. Hutton says inland lakes and streams in Iowa open today for several fish varieties. Artificial lakes remain closed until June 15.
Junior Bishop, son of Mr and Mrs W L Bishop, was injured when a tractor toppled on him while crossing a steep ditch. He was wedged between seat and wheel, unconscious for about an hour before neighbors freed him and he was taken to Washington county hospital. X rays showed no serious injuries and he rests there several days.
In Harlan Kentucky about six to seven soft coal mines resumed operations under National Guard protection. Guards armed with rifles bayonets and machine guns kept union pickets away as about 500 workers returned to work after a month and a half shutdown. Six or seven mines reopened with 500 workers.
The Journal launches a daily Get Acquainted feature with hand drawn portraits and biographies. The series will run until over 100 Washington business men and women are shown with diagrams of the business street.
The House approved a $305,188,000 rivers and harbors and flood control appropriation despite opposition from the economy bloc. A motion to recommit with a $50,000,000 cut was rejected 254 to 127 by Rep. D. Lane Powers of New Jersey.
Joseph W. Martin of Massachusetts urged the house leadership to confirm whether any deterrent taxes would be eliminated this session. Samuel Rayburn did not provide a definite answer, and a showdown conference with President Roosevelt and tax bill leaders was set for this afternoon.
Sunday rainfall measured point three inches in the area, according to official rainfall reporting.
Dorothy Livesey spent yesterday in Winfield visiting friends and taking a casual outing in the town with companions.
Iowa Taxpayers association reports that cities of 5000+ population spent $1,650,916 on fire protection for the year ending March 31 1938 averaging $2.04 per resident. Des Moines led costs at $486,981 and 3.42 per person while Centerville posted the lowest per capita at 35 cents. Salaries dominated expenses totaling $1,423,553. capital improvements were not included.
The Des Moines report says Iowa smokers used 120 million packs of 20 in 1938 with about 40 million packs bootlegged from neighboring states. About 2.4 billion cigarettes, per capita near 1,000, and state cigaret tax revenues around 1.65 million. A July 4 law requires stamping by manufacturers or wholesalers to curb bootlegging.
Liner Empress of Australia bearing the king and queen nears Quebec after fog delays. The ship passes Gallantry Head at 19 knots en route to dock at midnight. Prime Minister King confirms reception plans despite late arrival with state dinners in Montreal and Ottawa.
County officers and employees pushed for reduced hours and the board of supervisors approved closing court house offices on Saturday afternoons during June July and August. The plan starts the first Saturday in June and resumes normal hours the first Saturday in September aligning with practices in several Iowa counties.
At a Safety Council sponsored meeting in Washington the bicycle battalion elected Shirley Dunlap as captain Eugene Grecian and Howard Patton as lieutenants and Margie Logan as adjutant. Officers will serve until mid summer with plans for an upcoming battalion picnic.
In Harlan Iowa two youths identified as Selma Christensen 17 and James Reed 206 of Anita Iowa died when a car was struck by a passenger train at a town crossing. The mangled bodies hindered identification and the impact hurled Christensen a half block.
A Washington county rally and court of honor for Boy Scouts is set for this evening at 7 30 in the Y M C A. Sea Scouts from Iowa City will attend. Scouts will receive awards for work done, followed by entertainment including dramatized accidents, games, and a knot tying contest.
The Iowa Conservation Commission announced inland and river fishing regulations. Inland waters set seasons and limits for trout pike bass bullheads sunfish and others with a general possession limit twice the daily catch. For Mississippi and Missouri rivers seasons extend May 1 to next March 1 for certain species with identical limits. Artificial lakes have June 15 to Nov 30 season with 12 fish daily, and 12 lakes permitted though Reed's Lake and six others are prohibited.
Wayne Norman of the Washington county agricultural conservation committee announced that wheat allotments for 1940 are being determined. Farmers who did not grow wheat in the last three years must request inclusion as new wheat farms, but only about three percent will be allotted. Most allotments go to farms that grew wheat under the federal program in 1939 38 or 39. Approximately 3 200 acres are planted on 400 farms averaging eight acres per farm. A district meeting on checking 1989 crop program compliance will be held at Mt Pleasant May 18 with a county school the following week. Checks on corn oats and other grains begin June first. A radio notice notes the national farm and home hour on May 16 with R M Evans AAA administrator discussing farm problems impact on daily life.
In Turin on May 15 Premier Mussolini asserted peace is possible only after certain problems are solved, likely including Italy’s demands on France, framing a last chance for peaceful settlement with Britain and France. In Berlin observers say Mussolini signaled willingness to fight for Danzig-German union, while German propaganda calls this view a distortion.
Washington County hearings open as noon deadline passes for objections to vacating five minor roads in Marion English River and Highland townships. Property owners voiced concerns and the county board will rule later on the proposed actions.
Washington May 1 Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace announced that no marketing quota will be proclaimed this year for wheat.
Mr. Evans will discuss federal efforts through cooperation of farmers in the triple-A program to solve problems facing people in various parts of the country. The program begins at 10:30 A M with the Administrator heard on the Agriculture Department portion. O. D. Klein chairs the Iowa Agricultural Conservation Committee.
