In Iowa City at the University of Iowa Governor George A. Wilson plans to inspect the R.O.T.C. unit during Governor's day review. All state university military students will be excused from regular classes for the event.
Davenport reports about several hundred common laborers on strike the last two weeks expected to return to jobs Monday as negotiations continue for settlement of differences between laborers and contractors.
Mothers of University of Iowa students arrive on campus for a weekend event. An anticipated crowd of 600 to 1000 is expected at a banquet tonight honoring the mothers.
Dist Judge Frank Beehly directs John Weber of Ottumwa to pay $197.40 to the clerk of court by Monday noon or face contempt. The case concerns the 1931 closing of a receivership. testimony showed Weber served as receiver until 1931 with a cash balance of 197.40, then as agent who carried that balance into his agency.
About twenty Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce members traveled to Des Moines to promote Mulesta the so called only Mule rodeo in the world to be held in Excelsior Springs next September. They attended the dedication of an illuminated road sign at the junction of Highways 69 and 65 four miles south of Indianola and wore Mulesta costumes during the visit.
Cedar Rapids LBR McGladrey, president of the Iowa Society of CPAs, said April 8 the group submitted a report to Governor Wilson urging a revision of the state accounting system as very unstable. They claim there is no coordinated record of general financial transactions and no single source for authentic fiscal information for administrators.
Washington signs a contract with Willis Beaty for weekly garbage collection during summer. Beaty will serve each ward and business district on a set day, using a water tight vehicle and covered dump, with penalties for street dumping.
A late Iowa Association bulletin warns of magazine salesmen and other operatives using high pressure tactics. Incidents include false endorsements from educators, forged charity causes, and forged associations on the Lincoln Highway. Citizens are urged to report dubious propositions to police.
Mrs. W. A. Holland will be guest of honor at a Mother’s Day dinner tomorrow noon at the H. M. Putnam home. Other guests include Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Holland of St. Louis Missouri and Faye.
George Palmer Putnam, publisher and husband of Amelia Earhart, said two men who spoke German abducted him from his North Hollywood home. He was bound and gagged with tire tape in an unfinished Bakersfield house about 100 miles away, then freed after neighbors heard his cries. The men questioned him about his anti Nazi novel The Man Who Killed Hitler, and while no threats or motive were given, it may have been a scare.
County Agent J W Chandler announced three rat killing demonstrations next Tuesday. H D Tate from Ames will lead on poison bait and cyanide dust with sites at Charles Kennedy farm, Dewey Weeks place, and Will Kendrick farm. Tate will also speak at Brighton on household pest eradication.
Burial services for Miss Ethel Lee Howie will be held Sunday at 2 p m in Elm Grove cemetery. Rev William M Nichol of the United Presbyterian church will conduct the rites. L A Jones funeral home handles arrangements. Miss Howie, a longtime teacher, died in Omaha at 56. She is survived by her brother Rev W Durward Howie of Fort Morgan Colorado and her mother, buried in Elm Grove last year.
Mr and Mrs Lee Holland and their children Dannie and Carolyn are mentioned in a short family notice.
Iowa plans aerial photography to survey 28 counties in north west Iowa this summer under AAA plans. The Aero Service Corp of Philadelphia won a 35 915.20 contract to cover 15 416 square miles, using three planes to speed work. Flights rely on clear weather and clouded areas will be aided by plane positioning.
QUEBEC May 13 Official functions for the king and queen in America were cancelled as the Empress of Australia faced fog and ice delays. The liner with the royal party was not due until late Monday night, allowing little time for planned ceremonies in Quebec before a shortened Ottawa visit.
Des Moines May 13 John Hughes of Washington won a superior rating in a flute solo at Drake University junior college contest today. David Pearson of Washington earned a superior rating in his trombone solo and Bertha Macfeinert of Washington received an excellent violin solo rating.
Baron Louis de Rothschild, head of the central European banking family, arrived in Paris by train from Zurich after 14 months in Nazi custody in Vienna. He appeared in good health and refused to comment. Nazis denied seeking a ransom, saying they wanted funds tied to the Rothschild bank collapse.

A large audience attended the Sorden music studio recital last evening. Pupils performed vocally and instrumentally in two upstairs rooms with a loudspeaking system. The accordion band directed by John Yousling debuted to a hearty reception as part of Fortnightly club observances.
Mrs. D. C. Richardson will host dinner tomorrow for daughter Karen Jean and Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Richardson and family from the Dublin community.
