Ronald Hoag, 18, of Bradgate, was in serious condition after diving 10 feet from a bridge into the Des Moines River near his home. His head reportedly struck a rock and he suffered a fractured vertebra.
The Sioux county chorus of 22 women from Orange City will depart Saturday evening for the New York world's fair. They are scheduled to perform on the rural women's day program Tuesday.
Geraline LaFleur aged 15 months died in a drowning incident at a Panora area farmhouse. Her mother found the child dead inside a five gallon can of separated milk after leaving briefly to fetch food.
Genevieve Cowman, 20, of Derby and Frances Wilson, 19, of Corydon were arrested by Sheriff Paul Applegate of Marion County as they left a Knoxville courtroom after a larceny trial. They face charges of stealing four pairs of hose from J C Penney and two slips from Ben Franklin.
Three rug salesmen created a market for their products here but left without completing the sale. They slashed the rug in their hotel room and fled. The crew head was fined $4 for disorderly conduct and ordered to pay the hotel for the rug.
Cedar Rapids Iowa Linn county authorities continue their dawn patrol program started weeks ago to inspect early Sunday morning road houses for spiking incidents. The effort targets drink safety and public order in local venues.
Mr and Mrs John Fenton aged 46 and 41 farmers died almost together in Bloomfield. Mrs Fenton sat on her husband’s bed when a neighbor said John has gone. She replied I believe I am going too. He was a World War veteran and had been in poor health two years. Surviving sons Russell 18 and Richard 9.
Rev. Donald Hayne was named the Catholic teacher in the University of Iowa school of religion replacing Prof. Christian Richard who has held the post for three years. Professor Richard will spend the next year studying in California schools on a fellowship. Father Hayne was named chaplain for Catholic students at the university with salary paid by Catholic organizations.
Carl Culver a 46 year old former Benton county auditor pleaded guilty to embezzling about $1 000 in Clinton county road bonds owned by the Maplewood Cemetery association The District Judge B O Tankersley sentenced him to five years in Fort Madison penitentiary and Sheriff J B Franklin began escorting him to the prison.
Cedar Rapids Mrs. Ivan R Kelley practical nurse and mother of two will graduate from Franklin High June 7 while her son Keith, 14, moves to ninth grade. She left Orchard Consolidated after junior year and married at 16. She plans to enter Coe College next fall for chemistry and typing.
In Harlan Kentucky 800 state militiamen guard 42 soft coal mines as operations resume with about half the mines and a tenth of miners active. Union officials press for union shop contracts amid ongoing talks with mine owners and a planned mass meeting. Governor Chandler and UMW president Lewis clash over troop use while most mines reportedly operate.
The Journal received a note from the senior class president stating a mistake in last Saturday's issue. Clyde Griggs was listed as salutatorian, but Florence Stout was the actual salutatorian.
At a Le wton rooms meeting led by C C Reister and Dr P L Etter representatives of local patriotic groups began Memorial day observances. Committees were named for speakers bands parade and decorations with Lt W G Eldridge in charge of speakers and Mrs Florence Hout overseeing graves decoration. A school participation plan and park band concerts were announced with talks planned at Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries and hope for L F Sigafoose’s civil war veteran presence.
The State Bureau of Labor reports Iowa industries posted a 1.6 percent April employment gain over March based on firm reports, with 4.5 percent higher employment in April 1939 versus April 1938. Major gains occurred in many sectors while food products and patent medicines lagged. Building activity rose 3.4 percent year to date. payrolls held steady as hours declined only slightly. In 17 largest cities, employment rose 1.5 percent over March with Mason City up 9 percent and Des Moines up 2 percent among others.
Trustees Ode Ferguson J E Bovee and George E Gilbert announce a ten percent dividend on certificates of participation from the Washington National Bank Washington Iowa payable May 17 1939 at the National Bank of Washington. About 2400 holders will share roughly $25000.
In Newton Iowa Judge J G Patterson dismissed charges of kidnaping against Byron W Barrett and six other union men linked to the Maytag factory strike. Three union officials were freed of criminal syndicalism indictments though Willis Sentner and Hollis Hall face separate syndicalism charges slated for Montezuma in the fall term.
The article notes Straw Hat Day will be annual in Washington and the Midwest. Stores plan early purchases and expect large straw sales this weekend as weather favors straw visors over felts. About 60 men to wear the new 1989 straws Sunday with brighter colors and bold bands, sailors remaining a classic but softer straw styles predicted to outsell.
Doctor D C Barrett reports Washington county preschool health drive results. Of 151 children examined, 155 vaccinated for smallpox and 50 immunized for diphtheria. Vaccination rates exceeded prior clinics with 75 percent vaccinated and 86 percent immunized.
The senior class play Try It With Alice will be staged in the high school auditorium Friday at 8 p m. Tickets cost 35 cents for adults and 25 cents for students and may be bought at Phillips and Hebner's drug store starting tomorrow morning.
Mrs BE W Spessard of Almsworth was a caller here this morning and exchanged greetings with local residents. She spoke briefly about community events and future plans.
Iowa Highway Commissioner L McKinnon visited Washington and updated city officials on paving Second Avenue to connect with highway No 1 and the underpass near Rock Island and Milwaukee tracks. Plans include concrete slabs, rock asphalt shoulders, and routing changes for No 1 and No 92 with state funds at no city cost. The council also discussed downtown parking, bought a new police car from Studebaker, and considered silent alarms for small fires and improved street lighting contracts.
Construction on Washington's two new elementary schools continues with Public Works Administration funding. Stewart School on North Fourth Avenue nears roof completion, plastering to follow. Lincoln School on South Fourth Avenue has foundations poured and brick work soon to start.
Clarence and Lydia Davie of Crawfordsville and Tlal Huston of Wyman were callers here today, adding to this morning's routine at the local office.
Howard Dawson of Washington was bound over to the September grand jury on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. He was held on $1,000 bonds at the county jail after failing to post. Authorities say Dawson borrowed a horse from Dewey Weeks and sold it to Willard Schantz for 30 dollars, with Weeks reclaiming the animal.
Detroit May 16. A labor dispute forced the Hudson motor car plant to close, with workers idle as talks continued. The closure affects production lines and monthly output expectations. No resolution announced by management or union leaders at filing.
London May 16 United Kingdom cabinet foreign affairs committee considered concessions to bring Russia into the European anti aggression front. Full cabinet approval expected Wednesday morning. Talks follow Moscow note and Daladier Bonnet plan to speed up agreement aiding Poland and Romania in a defensive war with Russian aid if requested.
Washingtons troop of the 113th cavalry faces its annual inspection by Lt Col John D Kelly a regular army officer at the troop field on the cemetery road near South Iowa avenue Weather has hampered horse training and efficiency CAPT Jay Brown says All members are expected to be present The inspection begins at eight with Colonel Kelly spending about an hour questioning members and the drills to follow around nine Adjutant General Charles H Grahl Major C J Lambert and other officers are expected to attend
United Auto Workers officers say the plant was closed by the company after a workforce reduction caused a line slowdown. The union, CIO affiliated, reports 6,500 workers idle as a result of the shutdown.
