Derald Edwards presented a three pound beefsteak mushroom and claimed a weekend harvest of over a bushel. Wayne Owen brought a five ounce morel sponge type, noting it as a dandy despite lighter weight.
Forrest Lance Miller of Washington received eight days in the Washington County Jail after a guilty verdict for driving with a suspended license. District Judge Harlan Bainter upheld Magistrate Bernard C. Dawson’s prior five day sentence. Greg Duane Plank of rural Wellman was convicted of operating under the influence, fined $300, license suspension, and mandatory Drinking Drivers School at Kirkwood Community College.
The Washington County Izaak Walton group hosts a Fish Day for handicapped children at Marr Park starting 10 am on Wednesday May 15. Participants from Iowa City and Washington fish at the park pond then gather at the Izaak Walton clubhouse for a picnic lunch. Donations of time money or food are invited to contact Myron Salladay in Washington.
Lori Williams led Sunshine Party to victory in Washington High School student council elections for 1974 75. She was chosen Friday to head the council with Perry Stannard as vice president Kathy Bates secretary and Brian Caldwell treasurer. Opposing party Advanced Candidates included Mark Keedy Lynn Sines Brenda Sobaski and Gary Crawford.

Early returns show a two to one lead for keeping divorce with 316,995 yes to abolition and 645,930 no as precincts report. Major cities hint at support for the law while Bologna Genoa Rome and Florence show heavy no votes. Voting extended over 22 hours amid campaigns over family unity versus freedom of choice.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Justice Department violated federal wiretap law during the Nixon era, nullifying narcotics and gambling prosecutions tied to wiretaps. The decision affects cases nationwide, including an Baltimore narcotics case against Dominic Giordano and 13 co-defendants, and clarifies required authorizations for wiretaps under the Omnibus Crime Control Act of 1968.
Iowa may see more service station shutdowns in the next seven weeks as a law requiring 30 days notice before closing takes effect July 1. Shell Gulf and Standard Oil have or are near closing, with 200 stations already shuttered since 1972.

Tornadoes ripped through Florida Georgia and South Carolina Sunday causing at least four deaths all in Georgia and injuring about 18 people in Glennville and Savannah trailer parks. Civil Defense placed South Carolina damage around 500000 and Georgia around 200000 with more losses in Florida.
Nathan Richard Miller of Kalona is jailed in Washington County on a charge of entering a bank with intent to rob after a Kalona Bank night depository incident. Debbie Sue Cole, also of Kalona, faces possession charges. Two juveniles were later handed to authorities. Officers found marijuana grow operations in the Kalona apartment. FBI aided in the investigation following the incident yesterday.
UPI reports Henry Kissinger held talks with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem to bridge gaps with Syria over a Golan Heights disengagement. Officials estimate a 50 50 chance of an agreement, while Israeli optimism varied as Kissinger met with Golda Meir amid protests and a planned Damascus trip.
Thunderstorms tonight in Zone 13 may become severe with large hail and damaging winds. Winds diminish tonight with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. Showers and cooler conditions expected Tuesday with highs in the 60s. Rain chances are about 70 percent tonight and 40 percent Tuesday.
