McNamara eyes congressional briefing on Vietnam war progress
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, returning from Saigon, said he would be very happy to brief Congress on South Vietnam progress. He warned the war would be long and hard, with a plan to double Vietnamese air force pilots to about 800 and step up American training. He dismissed a Saigon report of a five to ten year war as an error and affirmed U.S. aircraft were well chosen for the conflict.

Eisenhower Rejects Bid to Dictate GOP Choice
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared strict neutrality in the Republican nomination race returning to Pennsylvania from California. He said he would support the eventual party choice at the national convention and would not lead a stop movement, stressing he would not dictate who Republicans should nominate. He hinted support for Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton but called any such decision Scranton’s. He plans no immediate talks and will follow the convention’s decision.

The Washington Community School district board convened for a busy session approving graduating seniors, the eighth graders, and the administration building report from a architect and a structural engineer. They heard financials for activities funds, discussed community college survey, adult education report, and enrollment increases with 59 winter students across five classes. The board set two H. E. Shields scholarships at 500 and 400 dollars, hired Carol Olesons as junior high social studies teacher, approved aluminum doors for Lincoln school and blacktop resurfacing, and authorized purchase of a double B flat contrabass clarinet funded partly by activity funds. Summer enrollment reached 120, and a closed circuit TV trial at the junior high was reviewed.
