Wing Tank Debris Traced to Jettisoned Military Fuel

At Monona Iowa a farmer heard two explosions and found fuel wing tanks from a military aircraft. Investigations ruled out an crash and officials at Truax Air Force Base and Waverly radar station confirmed no aircraft were in the area at the time. Vocal students on annual tour this week

Washington High School vocal music students received a warm reception during their annual tour this week. The chorus performed at North English and Waverly Shell Rock, with stops in Cedar Falls for dinner and Lindale Plaza in Cedar Rapids before returning home. The Top Twenty highlighted selections alongside the full chorus, directed by Vernon Feuerhelm.

Willis to lead expanded Iowa Highway probe in Des Moines

A former FBI agent was hired by the Republican Legislative Interim Committee to head a broad inquiry into the Iowa Highway Commission. Ned Willis, a Perry attorney and former Dallas County prosecutor, will start immediately with a top rate of 150 dollars a day. The probe targets who urged the switch from Portland cement to asphalt on an Interstate 80 segment and seeks to uncover the decision process and any conflicts of interest amid ongoing legislative sessions and prior hearings.

Conservation board buys timber land in Marion Township

The Washington County Conservation Board announced the purchase of 8 acres of timber land in Marion Township. This first land purchase since the board's formation follows a November 1962 vote. Purchase price was $5,000, paid to Edd Otto and Addie Leichty. The site will serve as a timber reserve for camping picnicking and hiking.

Anthony P Sobaski dies at Brighton

Brighton obituary for Anthony P Sobaski 73 dies at home after heart attack suffered in poor health. Born May 13, 1891 in Jefferson County, he married Helene Becken in 1916 and lived mainly in Washington and Jefferson Counties as a retired farmer. Washington Area Community College survey report

A Washington area survey presented to the Washington Community School Board by the college committee predicts 164 eleventh graders would enroll or consider enrolling in a local community college. The group estimates an initial first year enrollment near 100 students, rising to 100 to 150 freshmen the second year for about 200 students total. Administrators support the concept and urge adding at least one vocational area to the curriculum to aid rural students facing dwindling farm jobs.
