The Senate ended a 150 year old tradition by approving a rule that lets members appoint girls as pages. Several senators voiced doubts during debates but fell silent at the vote. The measure requires a senator to oversee the safety and conduct of their appointed pages.
Des Moines reports the Catholic Bishop Maurice J. Dingman urged a crescendo of prayers for passage of school legislation aiding financially troubled non public schools. He noted support from Gov. Ray and Lt. Gov. Jepsen but said lawmakers have stalled relief citing state money problems.
Senate debate focuses on amending the road use tax fund by taxing all used motor vehicles. The Ollenburg plan would apply the 3 percent use tax at title transfer and tax sales by private individuals and dealers. The move seeks to replace lost road funding with about 14 million dollars. Hill and Riley proposals fail. Senate adjourns with Ollenburg amendment pending as Republicans back the broader tax package.
Governor Ray said the University of Iowa campus remains very quiet but the Iowa Highway Patrol will stay for at least three days. He noted about 25 instigators among 20 000 students, with 100 arrests during a week of demonstrations and a tear gas incident. 200 patrolmen checked IDs at dorms while visitation was suspended. dorm officials limited access to residents with university IDs. County wide venture organized to aid the handicapped held a well attended meeting at a local nurses home. Representatives from social services the bureau for the mentally retarded parents and others discussed improving facilities and forming a county wide executive council with members from Henry Louisa and other areas. Paperwork for incorporation will be filed soon with an executive director and coordinator named. The program aims to design services meeting needs of all handicapped in the area with over 100 potential participants noted.
