Four underage boys from the Washington area were apprehended in Topeka Kansas on Tuesday as runaways. Parents have left to bring the youths home from custody in Topeka.
Five US Air Force F4 Phantom bombers flew from Laos into North Vietnam to attack antiaircraft emplacements that fired on them. The two raids, 45 minutes apart, marked the 36th and 48th protective reaction strikes this year and last. All five planes returned unharmed.
Police reported at least 20 Iowa Highway Patrolmen were injured by rocks and debris as about 1,000 students gathered near the dorms during a second straight night of unrest at the University of Iowa. Ten arrests were made, including Dave McCuskey charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Authorities evacuated 1,300 dorm residents after false alarms, and some protesters were believed to be nonstudents.
The Washington County Community Action Committee will hold its annual meeting in the drivers license room of the county courthouse basement at 7:30 p.m. on May 17. Yearly program reports will cover Planned Parenthood, Employment Service, Emergency Food and Medical, Summer Youth Employment Service, Career Opportunity Program, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Operation Mainstream, Homemaker Home Health Aid, and the Governors Dropout program. The nominating committee report and board elections will follow, with a representative to the Southeast Town Community Action Agency to be chosen. Announcements of summer programs and 1971 72 funding will be given. all county residents invited.

Des Moines leaders clash as the Iowa Highway Commission seeks flexibility in staffing. Des Moines Republicans regroup to push a broad tax package through the Iowa House by a 52 to 39 vote after 13 days of debate. The plan includes a state funded foundation for education, adjusted local income tax components, and a shift toward a progressive tax structure while facing Senate overhaul.
Mike Bates was named Star Chapter Farmer at the FFA Parent and Banquet held Tuesday evening. Bill Hennigan of International Harvester was named Honorary Chapter Farmer but absent. Dr. Alan Kabler of Iowa State spoke on the Age of Aquarius as Dwight Seegmiller of Decorah was elected Iowa State FFA President. Wade addressed Thoughts on Pollution. 1971-72 officers installed: Dave Smothers president, Charlie Wolfer vice president, Randy Wehr secretary, Mark Rogers treasurer, Gary Wade reporter, Bruce Guy sentinel.

Land prices rose about 3 percent in the year ending March 31, the Agriculture Department reported, the smallest gain since 1961. Gains were strongest in the Southeast and Atlantic Seaboard where urban growth and nonfarm factors pushed prices higher, while major farm states like Kansas, Illinois and California showed smaller increases or declines.
