Three Men Dead In Flooded Mine Near Shamokin
In Shamokin Pennsylvania on May 18 three miners were entombed and presumed dead after dangerous flooding at an independent mine two miles east. Rescue crews used a 105 gallon drum in a bid to reach the victims as water from an adjacent abandoned colliery surged in. Benjamin Reidinger, on surface duty, investigated after not hearing from the men and found the mine flooded. Investigators believe the men breached into the water filled abandoned colliery while drilling for coal, causing the flood and likely drowning.
