Mistaken holdup attempt ends with fine for Buresh

Y's Men Register for District Conference

Washington Y's Men's club members met at the Y.M.C.A. to finalize plans for the district conclave on Sunday May 16. Delegations from Muscatine Cedar Rapids and other registrations were anticipated. Boy Scouts Plan District Camporee in Washington Area

Boy Scouts in the Washington district announce a two day Camporee on Saturday and Sunday May 15 and 16 at Seckum Ridge seven miles south of Washington near Coppock road. Harold Hazelett directed by George Gragg area scout executive will oversee the event. Scouts will depart at 2 PM Saturday and stay outdoors until 2 50 PM Sunday with church services arranged for Sunday morning and each troop supplying its own food and gear.

73,000 Chrysler workers walkout in Detroit area strike

About 73,000 Chrysler auto workers began a nationwide strike at 8 a.m. CST across 11 Detroit plants and nearby sites in Indiana and California. The action, part of a wage demand standoff, led to further layoffs at Briggs Manufacturing and other Chrysler suppliers, with disciplined walkouts and early picket lines at Highland Park and Dodge plants. Gov. Emil Mazey urged unity as tensions rose over the stalled 30 cent wage request.

Anderson backs farm stabilization plan urged by ex secretary

Clinton P. Anderson, former secretary of agriculture, told Chicago Economies Club that Congress should pass a long-range program to stabilize farm economy. He called it absurd that agriculture thrived mainly during wartime preparation and cleanup and urged an economic gyroscope to keep the nation on a steadier course.

One Washington Hen Hatches Giant Egg Echoing Report

Mrs. Alvin Stram of seven miles northwest of Washington brought to the Journal an egg matching the earlier reported giant egg: circumference six and a half inches and eight inches around the ends. The farm woman aimed to equal the previous record after reading the Journal account.
