Des Moines May 13 Iowa farmers, aided by dry conditions, completed most plowing and planted nearly 600000 acres of corn this week. The state agriculture department notes a favorable start to planting with normal conditions expected until June 1 and only light rain last week.
Carlile Iowa May 13 Tom Manson 55 farmer of near here was killed yesterday when the two tractors he and his wife were driving while returning home after plowing failed to hold on a hill, crashing and overturning. Mrs Manson was thrown free.
May 13. Yugoslavia apologized to the United States for a disagreeable incident in which local Yugoslav officials breached the diplomatic immunity of U S diplomats, a State Department spokesman said.

Fred N. Cooper will headline the Washington Chamber of Commerce dinner on Wednesday May 21 in the Y community room. Cooper is superintendent of the Iowa training school for boys at Eldora since September 29 1945 and has a record of reform methods and public speaking. He previously coached at Fort Dodge and served as high school vice principal and Legion commander. Tickets for the May 21 dinner are on sale, with season tickets for five dinners offered at 4.50.
The Washington Recreational Council reports progress on a two part plan for a temporary summer schedule and a long term project. Norman White will direct a cooperative Y boys program while a woman leader is sought for girls activities, and a dance plan includes separate youth and older group sessions. Contributions from Rotary and others support a lighted softball field, with potential sites reviewed and tennis court upgrades planned.
In Lake Success New York May 18 Arab states failed to push the UN to consider Palestine independence. The General Assembly political committee rejected Russia and Poland backed proposals to set up an independent democratic state of Palestine, ending their chance to insert independence into the Palestine inquiry commission’s mandate.
The city plans to purchase and install numerous traffic signs including speed limit 25 markers and no U turns signs to improve street safety. Parking will be restricted on parts of West Michison East Washington and South Second Avenue. Preparations for black-top repairs and seal-coat resurfacing are underway for early summer.
John Humphrey a 39 year old farmer was killed when his tractor rolled over on a steep hill while plowing near Bussey Iowa. Deputy Sheriff Rodney Keopple said the accident occurred yesterday on his farm. Authorities noted related discussions about lighted field projects and playground plans at Lincoln and Stewart school grounds.
A large crowd fills the high school auditorium for Alice Chadwickle’s comedy Tish staged by the senior class. Chief Justice Charles Wennerstrum of the Iowa Supreme Court received a six month leave of absence to join a military judicial tribunal for Nazi war crimes. Gov. Blue announced a temporary replacement to cover Wennerstrum's duties, and Wennerstrum awaits executive orders from President Truman.
