Cedar Falls reports that the Blue Key fraternity launches a student campaign to bring a European refugee student to Iowa State Teachers College next school year. A women’s faculty club has pledged support and about $500 is needed.
Emil Fevery, 55, a survivor of the 1912 Titanic sinking, died at his Marion home. He worked as a meat cutter on ocean liners including the Titanic and Lusitania, and for Buffalo Bill and Ringling Brothers shows. At his death he ran a Marion grocery store.
Mrs Anna Koeppel, mother of four, was acquitted by a justice court jury of assault and battery. The charge stemmed from claims she struck a 9 year old boy with a hard object while her daughters reportedly sent a May basket containing a live snake to a neighbor.
Nellie Harry of UlLummwa alleges in district court that on October 26 1958 Daniel McDevitt a collector for Iowa Appliance Co Commercial Credit Co and others slandered her during a birthday party dispute over washing machine payments.
Melvin Johnson a 23 year old Ottumwa fireman died from lockjaw after stepping on a nail during the J C Penney Co Fire in late April. He had worked through pain since aiding the 65000 dollar blaze and remained on duty until Thursday morning.
James Rogers, 21, once a noted hurdler in Indianapolis, sits in Sioux City jail after allegedly attempting a holdup at Barney Gelfand's clothing store. He reportedly stumbled while jumping over a small dog during the incident.
Four candidates sponsored by State University of Iowa sorority fraternity faction won seats on the union board, with two non fraternal winners. The victors are Dick Fedderson, Dick Witt, John Nichols, Nona Seberg, Cornelia Shrauger, and June Hyland. Seberg and Shrauger are not sorority members. Vacancies on the board of publications for Daily Iowan and Frivol went to Edward Hoag, Don Dodge, and John Evans.
Ames Iowa State College welcomed thousands to Veishea, a three day campus carnival. Kiff Cooley, 20, Fort Dodge, a junior home economics student, was elected by an all college vote as the Queen of Queens.
DES MOINES The Iowa conservation commission will proceed with its cooperation program with federal agencies on CCC projects until new members take seats July 1. A new $175000 annual appropriation will be available for the next biennium, with project funding requiring approval by both the commission and the state executive council.
National music week showcases continue with multiple recitals. Elsie Bratten announces a 2:00 PM home recital for her music pupils tomorrow. Mothers and friends invited.
The county reports a slow year for marriages with an empty May license book after May began. Only seven licenses were issued in April, five in March, January and February combined, with 35 licenses recorded in 1939 to date, 19 fewer than a year ago. A divorce case, Florence Triplett versus Sam Triplett Jr, was filed yesterday, and a suit involving Mrs. Ray Simpson and her son Jon Dennis of Manchester is expected tomorrow.
In Dubuque on May 12 a district court began a hearing on a petition for a permanent injunction to stop union members from picketing the Farley & Loescher wood workers plant. A noon recess delayed proceedings as witnesses from both sides were sought. Company witnesses described non-union men breaking through picket lines, the break crowd leaving at 3 30 am. No violence occurred. Six arrests from Wednesday’s clash were postponed indefinitely.
Graham store manager C. E. Binkert announced that the Washington shop finished second among 24 Graham stores in the Holeproof hosiery contest. Oskaloosa led, with Washington a close second. Special prizes went to Mrs. Bessie Tucker and C. E. Binkert for selling the most pairs, with other staff members sharing in the remainder of cash awards.

Interstate railroads paid $1,148,138 to the Iowa unemployment compensation fund in 1938, the largest share of total contributions of $7,926,124. Negotiators reached a tentative union shop contract between mine owners and 340000 miners, with a drafting committee set to prepare the agreement for full joint wage-hour conference. In London Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain said Britain and Turkey would conclude a definite long term agreement to cooperate in the eastern Mediterranean. Turkey would assist Britain if Egypt Palestine or Romania were attacked and Britain would aid Turkey if attacked. The move integrates Turkey into the anti aggression bloc with potential future talks with Russia to complete the alignment. In Paris the Chamber of Deputies backed Premier Deladier's war policy and the pledge to defend France and its allies if challenged by dictator nations.
Dr Reid of Denver told the Iowa Society of Osteopathic physicians that air conditioning should limit indoor-outdoor temperature difference to 10 to 15 degrees. Sharp changes from hot outside air to cool buildings may shock nasal passages, increasing susceptibility to infection and sinus trouble.
State entomologist Carl J. Drake warned that large areas of southern Iowa small grain will suffer chinch bug damage this year unless heavy rains destroy the pests. He noted the infestation is heaviest in the three southern tiers of counties with a center concentration and cited creosote barriers as the most effective control method.
DES MOINES the state tax commission announced it had purchased 40 new cigaret tax stamping machines to be placed in operation July 1 under the new system of collecting the tax from wholesalers and distributors. The machines which cost 611 each were purchased from the Postage Meter company of Stamford Conn and will be distributed to wholesalers who prefer to use them rather than the present gummed stamps.
Postmaster General James A. Farley arrives in Des Moines to address 800 Iowa postmasters amid speculation the talk is a probe of Iowa Democrats for a 1940 presidential bid. The state is seen as a launching pad for several aspirants. Henry A. Wallace and Harry L. Hopkins have tied to Iowa, with Wallace leasing a Des Moines house and Hopkins planning a Grinnell residence.
A NYA gathering is announced for this evening at 8 o'clock in the Legion rooms with Ives McKay in charge. All those taking NYA work are expected to be present.
President Roosevelt reiterated in Washington that any corporate tax changes must be offset by new revenue. He supported repealing the undistributed corporate profits levy only if a substitute funding method is found to make up the treasury loss.

Ames Iowa May 12 a two way corn cultivator shown by Iowa State college engineering during Veishen week display. The machine sweeps crosswise along rows with a rotating spider system while a corn planter maintains proper bean spacing. Also shown a corn combine and plywood chick house on skids. Demonstrations included tractor overturns reen ensilage and harvesting reen forage and a tug of war between high school boys and a tractor.
The Senate approved a record farm bill totaling 1 218 666 000 with 38 million in unbudgeted subsidies by a 61 to 14 vote. Senator King proposed a 10 percent across the board cut to federal appropriations. re commitment efforts failed. The bill heads to a House conference to resolve differences. the Senate bill exceeds the House 835 118 000. President Roosevelt opposed the extra subsidies and requested new revenue.
Forty five children were examined at the clinic held Wednesday in the Y M C A. Sixty five children were immunized and vaccinated. The physicians assisting included Dr W L Alcorn Dr A Keith Droz Dr C W MacLaughlin Dr C A Boice Dr W E Anderson Dr W S Kyle and Dr D C Barrett. P T A members assisted with the children and nurses included Mrs Robert Patterson Mrs Ted Crone Mrs R Rusenberry Mrs Carl Martin Mrs Darrell Ross Mrs Fred Downing and nurses Flileen Jeffrey Thelma Luther and Mrs D C Barrett.
Two ships reached Nova Scotia ports as 27 of 39 missing sailors were rescued after a collision at sea. Survivors rose to 36 with nine already back in Yarmouth recounting hours adrift in night clothes.
