Boice Receives Community Service Award At Rotary Event
Dr. CA Boice a pioneer Washington physician received the Washington Rotary Club's Community Service Award at the Spring Ladies Night Party at Washington Country Club. Rotarian Glenn Mace highlighted Boice's long medical career and community work, including a 21 day bedside vigil for a sick boy in an Oregon township. Boice thanked the club and his mother, recalling his care saving his life. He helped organize the Washington County Hospital in 1912, the Health Unit in 1926, a Maternal Care Unit in 1932, and edited the Iowa State Medical Journal 1911-1913. He earned the 1951 Iowa Medical Association Citation for Distinguished Service, served as WWI/II exam iner for Selective Service, and wrote extensively on medical topics. He also promoted sanitation and preventive medicine, fighting typhoid, diphtheria, scarlet fever and other illnesses. Outside medicine, he served on the Board of Education, Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Tuberculosis Association, and the Iowa State Board of Health. He noted surprise at the award and pride in local doctors. Harry Spohn, former Des Moines meteorologist now in Lincoln, spoke, recalling South Pole reporting in 1962-63. The evening honored perfect attendance certificates for one to five, six, seven, and more years with multiple Rotarians listed.

Hoffa Trial Opens Over Pension Fund Loans Case
In Chicago, James R. Hoffa and seven associates face charges of fraudulently obtaining more than 25 million in loans from the Teamsters pension fund and diverting about 1.7 million for personal use. Defense lawyer Maurice Walsh argued the fund secured every loan, while prosecutors contend a pattern of fraud and conspiracy existed. The eight jurors and four alternates heard opening remarks as witnesses were expected to begin testimony shortly. Hoffa, convicted in a prior jury tampering case in Chattanooga, Tenn., is appealing that sentence.
