A Sioux City municipal court judge dismissed Marie Bell’s demand for a peace bond against her husband after she admitted kissing Joby Bell goodnight following a disturbance that led to police involvement. She testified he threatened her with a razor.
Fire gutted the 10 room home of W T Branagan Emmetsburg editor. Damage set at 3500 dollars was covered by insurance. The flames confined to the upper two stories. Early files of the Democrat Branagan's paper were destroyed.
After recent rains Pella hosts the fifth annual Tulip Time festival opening today for three days. Officials say more tulips than ever will be in bloom with about a million and a half blooms from 70 imported varieties at peak during the final three days.
Davenport police arrested Howard Kennedy aged 20 within 24 hours of a theft at the Municipal Art Gallery. Detectives traced the cameos valued at hundreds of dollars to a sale for 3.60 dollars. Kennedy was arrested as officers were at the location.
Charles Busby aged 31 pleaded guilty to assault with intent to inflict serious bodily harm in a Waterloo jury trial. He admitted slugg ing Jerry Edwards, 36, March 19 near an upscale Waterloo area. Edwards was found in a ditch with a fractured skull after being beaten with an automobile crank.
Postmaster General Farley visits Des Moines for a two day session with Iowa postmasters. He attends a shop talk and delivers a dinner address at the Iowa chapter National Association of Postmasters convention. More than 800 postal heads and wives expected. He is the fifth cabinet member to visit Des Moines in about a year and the fourth this year.
Iowa health officials urge residents to guard against flies mosquitoes ticks and fleas as breeding peaks. They recommend using pliers or rubber gloves to remove ticks from dogs to avoid disease spread, noting some ticks carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever while others do not.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain addressed 10 000 Conservative women in London urging dictators not to threaten Polish independence or seize Danzig. He warned Britain would join any general war and outbuild Germany if a race starts, calling the speech decisive.

Mrs. Kate Singmaster died at her daughter’s home on the Singmaster ranch south of Keota after months of illness. She is survived by two daughters Mrs. Edward Flander and Mrs. Frank Flander, and by a son Clarence who was killed in a year ago automobile accident. Her husband Tom Singmaster died December 31, 1915. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9:30 at St Mary’s church Keota with interment in St Mary’s cemetery.
A Washington outdoor band concert drew a large crowd downtown and in central park as the Washington concert band directed by Hal Releter performed rhythmic selections for National Music Week. Norma Payne drew interest near the bandstand with a tap dance and the week’s schedule includes a Lorden Music Studio recital tomorrow.
Mrs Homer Birney and her three sons James Richard and Wayne Knupp together with Kay Whisier will go on a trip.
Washington County uses Grace Hill quarry to produce limestone for road surfacing. WPA labor has operated the mine for six years. vast rock deposits remain ready for crusher work to widen miles of highways. Lime dust and oil trials may improve road surfaces. Sargent company runs the crusher and hauls rock to the Washington Riverside road. A local pastor envisions a future lake if quarry earthbanks are repurposed for recreation.
They travel to Ames in the morning to spend the day and will attend the annual field day held as part of Welsha week activities.
The flag pole for Elm Grove Cemetery was ordered last night and should arrive within a week. Jesse Radda, chairman of the patriotic societies committee, announced the pole will be in place by Memorial Day and the dedication ceremony will be held afterward.
Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr said he would examine the tax laws to identify any hindrances to business and recovery. He asserted he had not been forbidden from presenting the issue to Congress and defended democracy.

A massive explosion and fire on Chicago south side ruptured a three cell Rosenbaum Bros elevator. Ten men are feared dead, eight more burned, others missing as 100 fire rigs and 400 firefighters battled the blaze. Damages exceed a million dollars.
A health service program begins Friday at the Wellman Methodist church basement for eight weeks. Pearl Olson maternity nurse from the Washington county health unit will teach eight Friday sessions from 2 to 4 pm focusing on family health and plague prevention for Wellman women.
