City workmen hope to begin the annual Spring Clean-up in Washington next week with trash collection dates to be announced. If weather holds, crews will start their rounds in a few days, supplementing the usual weekly sanitation truck service. Residents are urged to cooperate and clear trash from their properties.
City police plan to begin strict enforcement of the two hour parking limit in the business district next week. Enforcement will target curb spaces in front of business houses near the square where signs indicate the limit.
The Mid-Prairie Junior High School hosts its annual Fine Arts Festival on Tuesday May 16 at 7 30 pm in Kalona. Choruses and two bands perform while art instructor Mrs Barbara McGregor presents student works. Directors are David Graber and Lambert Neill with no admission fee.
A two year old boy, Ryan Henrichs, wandered from his home north of Shell Rock and drowned in a gravel pit. Butler County Sheriff's officers and searchers recovered the body. Officials ruled the death accidental.
An antiwar rally scheduled at the Federal Building Des Moines noon Thursday aims to draw students from nearly all Iowa colleges. The main turnout is expected from Iowa State University in Ames with a 200 car caravan organized by ISU student government.
In Kellogg Idaho two young miners survived a week by eating dead co workers lunches and were rescued from a tunnel nearly a mile underground. Rescue workers found 12 more bodies bringing the toll to 47.
Showers or thunderstorms spread over western portions tonight and into central sections on Thursday. Partly cloudy conditions will prevail in the extreme east Thursday with lows in the lower 40s northeast to near 50 southwest. Highs Thursday range from the lower 60s in the northwest to around 70 in the southeast.
In two key primaries Humphrey crushed Wallace in West Virginia by a two to one margin while McGovern barely won Nebraska’s close race. McGovern’s third victory keeps him within reach of Humphrey, as delegates and future contests loom toward California.
U S planes hit Hanoi Haiphong and rail links to China while raids and naval bombardment in North Vietnam coastlines are to continue. Thieu declares martial law as seven MIGs are reported shot down and feared pilots captured in escalating air battles.
An open house and reception will honor Irvan Rich and Mrs. Pearl Craft, retiring teachers from the Brighton elementary center. The Brighton PTG hosts the event in the school gym Thursday from 7 to 8 30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all friends and former students are invited.
Forrest Frosty Schwengels Fairfield Republican and Parsons College official announces his candidacy for the Iowa Senate from the new 4th District. A 56-year-old former Air Force officer, he has served on the Jefferson County Central Committee since 1969 and held multiple national security and academic posts. He and wife Betty have three children and he chairs programs at Parsons while active in church and fraternal organizations.
4 H members in Washington and Johnson counties will exchange with Cape Girardeau County Missouri this summer. The Washington area group travels June 26 to July 1 and Missouri delegates visit August 7 to 11. Participants must be in 10th grade or above.
Fourteen Mexican economics students will stay with Washington residents May 12 to 15 as part of a State Department arranged tour. Local sponsors include Mr. and Mrs. Robert Day and host families in the area. The group will tour Cedar Rapids arrivals, farm activities, a YMCA potluck, and a calendar factory visit before departure.
Sixth graders from Lincoln Elementary and older students from Brighton and Stewart schools joined Conservation Day at Lake Darling state park. State conservation officers led the all day lessons on furs plant identification and fire fighting, with relics and Indian artifacts shown by Dick Tellier. Pleasant weather, wiener roasts, and softball capped the activities.
