VA GI Bill program fuels education and tax gains
The Veterans Administration reports 21.7 billion invested to educate 12.4 million veterans under three GI Bills over 26 years. VA training allowances average about 6,300 for the 36 months to earn a degree, with Census data showing the degree boosts income by 213,000 compared to high school only. Internal Revenue estimates about 40,000 in taxes on the additional income. Claude Gillam, VA regional director in Des Moines, says the federal government may recoup over six times its investment. Last year VA program participation peaked at 1,025,000 in November, up 31 percent from 783,000 in November 1968. Eligibility requires 180 days active duty, any portion after Jan 31, 1955, or discharge for service-connected disability.
