In Sioux City work on the new Negro Church of Christ building was halted after thieves removed over 6,000 bricks overnight. Also stolen were ten chairs and a table, delaying the project and raising safety concerns.
Mason City police officers debut blue uniforms replacing olive drab worn for two decades by order of Chief H. E. Wolle.
Waterloo 27 year old Raymond Fol da was fined 25 dollars and costs for throwing eggs during the picketing of four Waterloo stores. The demonstrators urged 100 percent enforcement of the 6 p m Saturday closing rule. Ten dollars of the fine were suspended.
Clara Byam of Sioux City is named president of the Iowa State college girls 4H club. Other new officers include Charlotte Heffner Webster City vice president Carol Sny dergaard Dallas Center secretary Helen Scott Ames historian Alvying Iverson Stanhope publicity chairman and Harriet Mears Jefferson program chairman.
Des Moines governor Kraschel said after a call with President Roosevelts son that he will attend a presidential conference in Fort Worth Texas on South American beef imports. Kraschel and the president plan to meet governors cattlemen and beef producers Wednesday.
Waterloo police declared war on traffic violators after three deaths from accidents in two weeks. Two Waterloo men were fined for reckless driving and six motorists paid fines for parking on the wrong side of the street.
Iowa City senior journalism student Brown ing of Iowa City was elected editor of the Daly Iowan by the board of publications. He will begin June 1 for a one year term and select his own staff. Browning is elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Iowa.
Six safety patrol members guided Betty Jeanne Plein across the street near her school. They carried her coffin to Linwood cemetery after she fell 45 feet from an old quarry ledge while picking wildflowers with other children.
Ames and Iowa City teams from the State University of Iowa and Iowa State College debate Hitchhiking ban. John Keller and Morrie Christy defend the negative for Iowa State while Addison Hickman and Robert Blakely support the affirmative for the State University in the Welshea feature.
DES MOINES Governor Kraschel disproves rumors of challenging Senator Guy M. Gillette in the 1938 primaries. He states he has not discussed his political future with anyone and aims to remain focused on being Iowa's governor, with much work ahead before any future plans.
The annual Y M C A board meeting elected John Wing a as president and Orville Elder as vice president with Fred L Stewart secretary and Leslie Dunlap treasurer. Don Sherman retires after long service as president and is named president emeritus. John Wings, longtime director, will lead the organization as it remains financially sound and debt free. Routine reports from Secretary Leigh Soule and endowment chair Leslie Dunlap noted steady activity and plans, including nine new dining room tables to be installed once funds arrive.
John OD. Gingerich and Anna Mast, both of Kalona, secured a marriage license in the city this morning, confirming their intended union.
The Baptist church congregation will hold its annual business meeting and officer elections tomorrow at 7 30 p m in the church. A cooperative dinner at 5 30 p m precedes the meeting with meat and coffee provided. members bring their own table service. New members who joined in the past year sit at a special table. Rev M C Carstensen will preside.
The congregation will burn the last mortgage on church property in a West Washington Street ceremony after a weekly church night program. A sketch titled Paying the Debt precedes the mortgage burning, with a cooperative dinner at seven and a musical program. Pastor Dr. Arthur Atack anticipates strong turnout.
May first conditions for winter wheat reach 78 percent and pastures 60 percent in Washington, according to Leslie M. Carl federal statistician. The report forecasts a state total of 16,500,000 bushels of wheat, the largest on record, driven by increased fall plantings and favorable weather. Sown wheat acreage hits 989,000 acres, more than double last fall's total.
Police were ordered on emergency footing as strike patrols doubled to curb violence by striking unions. Chief James E. Davis assigned nearly 100 extra officers to studios near Los Angeles and arranged reinforcements to Culver City Burbank and Universal City.
Des Moines May 11 The Iowa supreme court affirmed a Storm Lake circuit court ruling that state income and sales taxes are constitutional. Justice Richard Mitchell wrote the opinion stating the legislature had the right to pass the law. Bert and Oliver Vilas were denied injunctions and must pay taxes on their 1934 income and later income.
Envoy W L Lowe from Iowa State Headquarters completed a canvass of Washington County and moves to Jefferson County to continue fundraising. He notes sustained local support with occasional increases, raising about 300000, still below pre depression levels of 45000 to 50000. He thanks supporters and says funds fund practical state wide work including the Des Moines home for friendless girls.
Mrs Lee McAvoy aged 57 died at her home 8338 South Avenue C after a two year illness worsened since the start of the year. Funeral services are set for 2 30 PM Thursday at Shermans Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was active in the Baptist church Rebekah lodge and Degree of Honor. She was born Alice May Cooley July 30 1879 in Kent County Michigan and came to Washington at age five. She married Lee McAvoy June 3 1896 and is survived by her husband a daughter Mrs Zilda McCall of Crawfordsville and a son Warren McAvoy of Southern Pine NC who will attend the funeral along with five grandchildren and one brother Wilson Cooley of Carthage Illinois.

The Evening Journal carrier boys, twenty three strong, were guests of West Brothers Amusements last evening at Troop Field. The carriers enjoyed the riding devices and many were daring enough to risk their necks on them. Several rides were not operating as the carnival troupe had been late leaving.
The first district of the American Legion shows the highest membership percentage with the Leon Beatty post in Washington leading towns of 4 000 to 6 000 residents. The Bert L Halligan trophy will be awarded this year as the contest ends in late June.
Washington county rural schools plan graduation for about 140 eighth grade students Friday evening June 4 at the Methodist church. Prof C A Fullerton of Iowa State Teachers College cannot direct the rural choir this year and arrangements will be made for chorus singing by the pupils with phonograph accompaniment.
The management says the team will be ready for a full house this evening at Quincy Hillness, the site of their previous appearance before heading to Washington.
Clement Edgar about 35 died in a head on collision near Kirksville Missouri between a bread truck from Ottumwa driven by Edgar and a corn truck driven by Mr Palmer. The wreck also injured a young man with Edgar. Edgar’s wife and son survive along with multiple siblings.
The Eureka Sunday school reorganized Sunday May 9 with officers elected including Superintendent Miss Carol Benson and Treasurer Russell Davison. Rev. W L Clapp will pastor and invites all to services May 16 at 10 45 with the sermon The Worth of a Service.
London crowds cheer as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth prepare for tomorrow’s coronation. Addresses of loyalty from dominions and commonwealths are received at Buckingham Palace. The king pledges a new life and vows to carry on his father’s work with help from empire. 3000 gather for intercession led by the Duke of Kent amid lunch for empire reps.
The Iowa Children’s Home society tag sale yielded first prize to Margaret Ragan with a $7.01 collection. Stanley Wallace and Mary Redlinger tied for second with $6.09 each, followed by Audrey Hotle and Gladys Frits as fourth and fifth winners. Total collections reached $85.09.
State Senator Claire Dewey will speak at the May Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Congress hotel. County Attorney Richard A. Stewart, chair of the program committee, says Dewey will discuss the recent state legislative session and enacted laws. Dinner at 6:30 followed by the meeting. LL Rothschild chairs the dinner committee.
