Iowa column notes Governor Kraschel will return to his hometown on May 25 to speak to the Harhan High school graduating class of 1959. His son Richard is a member of the class.
Prizes awarded to Page school pupils for a county drive to rid Boone homes of unwanted papers and magazines. The effort collected more than 24 kidneys? It drew the attention of 1,400 school children for a week.
Announcement of the engagement of Miss Dorothy Aurit to Mayor John Kirthamers was made. It will be the first time in the city’s history that a mayor weds during his term. Aurit is a Clarke College graduate. Chalmer s is noted as the youngest man to hold the office and a University of Iowa graduate.
Lucille D Gripp of Thayer won the best Iowa essay in the Gorgas Memorial Institute contest in Washington Iowa. She will receive a $10 prize and her essay will be considered with winners from other states for national awards ranging from $50 to $500. Five essays will be chosen for national honors.
An eastbound Rock Island passenger train at Newton struck a man who laid on the rails as the locomotive approached. The victim’s papers identified him as Ik Stone, and authorities noted the event as a fatal railway incident with the body found on the tracks.
Ottumwa reports two elderly men in southern Iowa were robbed by gypsy women. David Daugherty, 76, a former officer, was relieved of $180 near Lovilla as the women tricked him into accepting a fortune telling, then slipped his emptied billfold back.
Davenport police seek ident ification of a man killed by a Milwaukee freight train after he fell between two cars while attempting to crawl between them. A witness described the decapitation occurring during the incident.
State banking superintendent Dr W Fates says more time is needed to verify assets before the Rossie Savings Bank can be reorganized after a cashiers disappearance. Last month the bank eased operations as Cashier C X Cate vanished. $2000 in each and $24000 in bonds were found missing.
Rev. George Pray, retired Sulphur Springs Presbyterian minister, born near Buckingham Palace, recalls royal playground days with princes and princesses. His father Lord Bray served in maidens to Queen Victoria and urged a royal path, but Pray chose ministry after a long family debate.
Senator New Died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore at age 79 from pneumonia. He served as Postmaster General and earlier as a U S Senator from Indiana. The death occurred last night in the Maryland capital.
Joe Falk traveled to Chicago Saturday night to spend Mother's Day with his mother Mrs Rose Falk seeking family time and a brief visit in the city.
The Iowa retrenchment and reform committee faces a 1 590 000 capital improvement allotment over two years. With only 795 000 available per year, they must rank priorities including replacing the Mt Pleasant visane hospital building burned last August as an urgent item.
A bice sized crowd gathered in Central Park Saturday evening for the Washington Municipal Band concert, opening a summer series under new director Milos Sorden. The 35 piece ensemble performed with the new sound system, featuring Daryl Fetters on bass and Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever. The Fortnightly Club music department sponsored a week of events during Mystic Week with additional concerts across Washington venues.
Dr. R. C. Gibson of a Chicago United Presbyterian church delivered two sermons to Washington United Presbyterian members. Morning topic was Memories of My Mother and evening topic was Fainting Spells. He was praised for fluency vigor voice and original subject matter keeping listeners engaged.
The Methodist church last evening drew a full house for a film program depicting the life of Christ. Shown were moving pictures from birth to crucifixion with holy land settings and vivid scenes of events before the crucifixion. Accompanied by musical scores the show impressed attendees and a free will offering was collected to cover expenses. The event complemented a sermon series by Rev. Arthur Atack using lantern slides on Christ’s life.

Forty one children from Washington elementary schools were immunized for diphtheria last week according to a report from Miss Laura Einspahr. The immunization is part of the county health unit program with each child visiting their family physician. If any children missed care last week they may be treated this week.
Ernest Kloepfer was taken to the county hospital with both bones broken in his right leg after a tractor accident while moving a disc on his father Will Kloepfer’s farm northeast of Richmond.
In Atlanta on May 10 a 16 year old killed his father, Arthur W. Everett, a 33 year old government meat inspector, at their home after the father pursued the boy’s mother from the kitchen with a butcher knife. Police report a family struggle culminated in the fatal shooting as authorities investigated the incident.
Thousands gathered in London as King George VI and the queen rehearsed the coronation procession. The king, queen, the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester, and the Archbishop of Canterbury received a tremendous ovation in ceremonial robes.

Rev H J Corcoran of St James Catholic church sails Saturday May 15 on the Conte Di Savoia from New York to Naples Italy. He will visit the Holy Land Egypt Greece and central Europe ending in Ireland after about three months. Priests from St Gabriel's monastery Des Moines will conduct services at St James during his absence.
Dr Telford a chiropractor now in Washington plans to move Wednesday to Fort Madison to set up office headquarters in the Lee county bank building and continue practice. He previously practiced in Fort Madison for fourteen years before moving to Washington in 1929 to be near his ailing wife who died in 1932. The Currap company owned office rooms on the west side of the square remain unrented.
Bishop H P Rohiman of Davenport confirmed a class of forty six children and thirteen adults at St James Church yesterday afternoon. The crowd filled the church as 23 boys and 23 girls took part. A dinner followed at Rev H J Corcoran home hosted for the bishop and twelve visiting priests with a tulip centerpiece and yellow pink colors.
Two Washington men, Raymond Tucker and Homer Birney, were each fined 10 dollars and costs totaling 13 dollars 55 cents after pleading guilty to an affray on the northeast corner of the square. Justice J E Bovee allowed installment payments and threatened jail if payments are missed.
Hen ry Merrill of Eastern Airlines finishes a 21 hour 2 minute Atlantic crossing landing at Croydon after departing New York. Co pilot John Lambie accompanied him, earlier stopping at Royal Airport North Weald Essex for directions. Weather slowed progress and the pair hoped to return to New York soon.
Joseph Hise of Richmond died at the home of William Kron near Richmond on Saturday. He was 75 and had lived near Richmond most of his life on a farm. Born March 18, 1862 in Ohio, he was the son of Jacob and Theresa Haag Hise. His wife Elizabeth Kros Hise preceded him in death May 27, 1936. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9 am at Holy Trinity church in Richmond with burial in Holy Trinity cemetery.
Washington high school marching band earned an excellent rating at the state music festival on Saturday. Eagle Grove received the only superior rating, while Atlantic and Albia also scored excellent. Fairfield’s band was rated good and tied for superior at the April district contest here.
Frank Morgan of Atwood Kans was killed in an automobile accident in Los Angeles. The funeral is planned around May 15 with burial in the family lot at Chardon Kans. Morgan had lived in Washington previously and visited here often.
