Oskaloosa reports no May festival at Joan Fletcher college University Park. Students held a dandelion dig and chose Eloise Johnston of Dickinson North Dakota as their queen while clearing the campus of weeds.
Hearing on a motion for a new trial for Minnie Hines, convicted with four others in the murder of Dan Shine a Lit hrm farmer, had been granted.
Denison Crawford counties mourn the death of M E Rowe 90 the area’s last Civil War veteran He is survived by his widow and four sons including Dr F N Rowe of Denison.
Thief Haught, under a ten year sentence for attempting to open a safe at Molo Oil Co, was nabbed by police after stopping at a Dubuque office to place a long distance call to his mother in Middlebourne West Virginia.
Des Moines inmate Jerry Whitie Keiler aged 58 held in city jail won a $10 Derby pool from fellow prisoners. He flashed a ten dollar bill to Jailer Arthur Hamilton Keller who noted the pool formed Saturday on the Kentucky Derby. Keiler said he drew War Admiral.
Shenandoah scene reports Raymond King Marquisie a bowling alley proprietor who vanished from his home on February 22 1936 and has not been seen since. Local records note his last known address and the unresolved disappearance remains an old case in the community.
Des Moines resident Jack Moguclus, owner of a cat involved in the incident, is jailed on intoxication charges after Ruth Ivan, 24, was killed near Colfax and sustained initial injuries.
Charles City reports red Schneider must serve a year in Fort Madison penitentiary after returning to Charley City and violating parole. Three years earlier Schneider pleaded guilty to assault and was paroled on condition to keep away from the city.

A Cherokee crash left 3 year old Richard Groth dead and his sisters Bonnie Lou seven and Dorothy six in fair condition at the hospital after a four car collision with their mother Mrs William Groth driving. Mrs Groth and another son were unhurt when the car struck a rut and overturned as she closed an open door.
Albert Orcutt arrives as the new manager of the Piggly Wiggly in Washington coming from Melcher Iowa. His wife and three children Phyllis Mae Kathryn Jane and David Allyn will join after school, and the Orcutts attend the Brethren church. He says his chief hobby is smiling at the customers.
John L. Lewis of the CIO declares open warfare on the American Federation of Labor at the Ladies' Garment Workers Union convention in Weehawken. He blames AFL leader William Green for traitorous acts and moral turpitude and demands a public statement endorsing industrial union principles.

Des Moines May 12 Iowa Daily Pres Bureau Young Democrats of Iowa gather in Des Moines May 17 for their annual convention with battles for national committeeman and committeewoman posts. Three men vie for committeeman: Bob Miller Jake More and Stanley Comfort. For committeewoman: Darlene Gordon Effie Johnson and Rachel Weston Wormhoudt seek the post. Delegates to the national convention will also be chosen. The Mike Conway trophy will be awarded to the county with the largest membership increase.
Edwin Clarence Hambright, 76, a partner in Gardner & Hambright Lumber, died in Wellman after a brief illness attributed to a heart attack. Funeral set for Friday at 1 PM in the Methodist church with burial in Tipton Masonic cemetery. He leaves two brothers and three sisters.
