A Camanch e farmer will receive a $10 000 reward from City National Bank of Clinton after the United States Supreme Court ruled on a case involving about $100 000 stolen from the bank by bandits three years ago.
Traer O. Owens reports his house cat recovering from a mumps siege after his daughter Jean and two younger children previously contracted the illness. The cat’s jaws were swollen so that kernels could be felt.
Peter L. Haas of Delhi files suit for 4792 dollars alleging a horse owned by Delaware County kicked him in 1934, breaking his right leg while shoeing the animal.
Dorothy Lampe, 16, of Clinton, was accidentally shot when her cousin John Anderson, 18, and others were playing with a .32 caliber revolver at the Lampe home. The bullet lodged under her right shoulder blade.
Robert Belcher and his brother Charles Belcher, both of Sioux City, were hospitalized in Sioux City after poisoning from eating mushrooms.
Fire in the Fred A. Wood residence on the North Side caused 3500 dollars in damage. An overheated fireplace sparked the fire, with most damage from smoke. The Wood family was away and their dog Mitzi died of suffocation in the home.
In Louisa County a relief office received four old age pension checks from an 80 year old woman and her husband. They had extended a loan later declared worthless after the borrower went bankrupt, and the couple chose honesty over reclaiming the funds.
Mrs. Albert Anton suffered gashes and bruises on her right arm and legs after a sow attacked her at her father Paul Ipsen's farm home in Iowa City. The incident occurred as Mr. Anton gathered asparagus in an nearby orchard when the sow’s attack by a piglet litter began.
Mrs Carrie Chapman Catt, 77, urged voters to carry on after the suffrage victory to achieve perfect democracy. She spoke at the unveiling of the Iowa statehouse memorial to pioneer suffragists in Des Moines. Catt is president of the NAWSA and honorary president of the Iowa commission.
Teams from Mason City High and Abraham Lincoln High Council Bluffs tied for first in Des Moines state shorthand and typing contest. Council Bluffs awarded permanent possession of the championship trophy due to prior victories.
County notices call for additional enrollments in the CCC from relief families. Eligibility information shows enrollments must be filed by May 165. The may be part of county welfare efforts to place relief households into CCC programs.
At Geneva on May 11 the League of Nations council rejected recognizing Italian sovereignty over Ethiopia. Italy dismissed the move, while Ethiopian delegate pressed for seat at council session. Baron Aloisi warned he would leave if Haile Selassie or Badoglio figures attend, as Mussolini pursues a new imperial link with Ethiopia.

Mrs William Ruby 35 died 2:30 a m at her mother Mrs Martha Cook home. Born March 28 1901 near Valley she was married to William Ruby March 29 1919. Survived by husband daughter Thelma mother sister and three brothers. Funeral pending with tentative services tomorrow at Friends church Rubio and burial in Clay cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Charles Um land and daughter Phyllis Miss Esther Johnson and Leo As lend all of Shabbona NL visited Sunday at the Emil Um land home.
Burlington Epworth League elected officers at a Saturday banquet. Rev Fred Miller led as district president with Wendell Creath elected vice president and Virginia Kephart as first vice president. Other officers include George Schuff, Annadeine James, Paul Hann, Lester Bill, Delbert Flynn and more. 60 attendees heard toasts and devotional services led by Rev Miller and Rev J H W Krenimyre.
A supply of bumper signs for Washington County Centennial will be distributed to car owners for the June 29 to July 4 celebration. The two types fit most bumpers and are sold at the Journal office. Local men Jack Humble and Dick Pratt organized the purchase.
Introductions were made by Rev Harold Bre mer the retiring district president and Dr L L Weiss of Muscatine gave the blessing at the banquet table.
Joseph Jasper McConnell age 85 longtime Iowa educator died Saturday evening at his home two miles north of Ainsworth after a lengthy illness. He held honorary degrees from Coe College and the State University of Iowa and served as superintendent in Atlantic and Cedar Rapids before guiding the Cedar Rapids schools for twenty years. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery followed services at United Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev S Fred Sharpe.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam held James Webb for Buchanan County on charges of breaking and entering and trailer theft. Webb has been selling stolen trailers and fencing at community sales after a spree across Independence and West Liberty. He is a 31 year old native of England with seven prior arrests and two prior deportations from Canada.
The Journal plans a extensively illustrated county centennial edition produced with help from eighty correspondents. Community members are invited to submit historical photos and authoritative information for the June 26 distribution. The edition will feature condensed readable articles rather than long pieces and accompany the June 29 to July 4 celebration.
Washington county poultry output tops 19 million eggs in 1934 with 1,612,881 dozen produced from 2,245 farms. The county had 472,142 chickens raised and 309,317 chickens on hand January 1, 1935, while 31 farms reported commercial turkey raising totaling 3,855 birds. Washington ranked 29th among Iowa counties in 1934 egg production.
Pierce Knox son of Mr and Mrs 8 W Knox of Washington will travel to Cleveland this week to compete in the national music contest He earned a superior rating with his xylophone solo at the Iowa state contest in Iowa City last week which qualified him for the national meet He will ride a special train with many other contestants to Cleveland for the event.
Mothers were celebrated across Washington churches on Mother's Day with tributes in most services. Sermons on maternal influence were delivered by Dr. B. F. Schwartz, Dr. F. W. Eastwood, and Rev. M. Carstensen. Special recognition occurred in Christian, Trinity Lutheran, Foursquare Gospel, Christian Science, AME, and St. services.
Washington county welfare office reports a decrease of 92 unemployment relief families from April last year. This April totals 123 direct relief cases and 92 employed on works programs, with 215 families aided overall, compared to 307 last year.
At a Saturday meeting the Washington County Board of Supervisors named a county board of health to run the forthcoming health unit starting July 1. The board includes two new members Mrs Gates and Dr McCreedy, replacing two former members. The panel will hire a director physician a county nurse and a sanitary engineer and set a budget for the year along with duties on sewage water and dairies. A prenatal education program funded by federal Social Security money will begin in the county this week under county medical society supervision. The project rests with Dr Boice Dr McLaughlin and Dr Worley.
Mrs. Elmer Wells is spending a few days in Chicago with her daughter, Mrs. Harold Duke.
Music and programs filled the Sunday schools as Paul's Evangelical churches observed services. A strong communal tone marked the day with faith activities for all ages.
Both sides claim victory as the House braces for a test vote on the Frazier Lemke bill to refinance farm mortgages with new currency. Speaker Byrnes predicts defeat despite administration calls to vote quickly. The measure, backed by Lemke of North Dakota, seeks to force a House consideration and faces a Roosevelt administration veto threat.
Emma Black and Nate L. Black traveled to Chicago for the funeral of Blanche Shelton, daughter of Sally Shelton. Born about 50 years ago in this city, she lived here in childhood before moving to Chicago with her parents. Her father Miles Shelton, a longtime Pullman porter on the Milwaukee Chicago Kansas City line, died recently.
Edith Reiter presented piano pupils in a Saturday recital at the Christian church attended by 50 to 60 people. Mil burn McKay led the Washington municipal band in the season opening concert in Central Park drawing a large crowd. Keister showcased eight pupils in the recital with excellent performances. Programs for both events were printed last week and followed as scheduled.
Edwin Griffith of Wilton Junction hosted a Mother’s Day visit with Mr and Mrs John Swazil of Burlington spending the day at his home with Mrs Griffith.
