Policemen Edward Ballard and Sam Hoffman escaped injury though their squad car sustained major damage after colliding with L. W. Clancy’s vehicle while speeding to an earlier accident.
A Dayton fountain over an artesian well attracts onlookers as a hand blocks water for 30 seconds then a lighted match is placed at the pipe mouth. Flames rise 15 to 18 inches, burn briefly, then extinguish with a puff. The fountain has operated for five years and the well for over four decades. Cause unknown.
Amy Gilbert longtime Iowa Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution died at her home in State Center after recent liver surgery. She had served as state regent and held roles including auditor and treasurer within the DAR.
Webster City reports 2 year old Coleen Wilson died at the county hospital after a truck backed from Clyde Strachan’s driveway. The child, in the care of a brother, was playing when struck. Strachan, 19, had been working on the truck. sister Mary Wilson, 17, was seriously injured last fall in a separate incident involving her father George Wilson.
Independence University of Iowa alienists declare Rodney Pace 17 accused slayer of his brother Ogden is sane. He must plead guilty or stand trial.
Kossuth County Sheriff Carl Dahlhauser reported to the state bureau of investigation that thieves broke into a Fenton Iowa creamery and trucked away 45 tubs of butter weighing 64 pounds each.
Jefferson county grand jury indicted PFor rest M. Ferren of Ottumwa on a charge of uttering a forged instrument. He is a former representative of the Bankers Life Insurance Co.
The United Lumber Co of Clinton buys the Wallace Lumber yard at Marengo. The yard will be remodeled to handle building materials and fuel. Wallace Lumber operates yards in Iowa City Washington and Keota.
In Black Hawk county Waterloo officials say new automobile owners receive pasteboard license plates due to heavy initial registrations. More than 2,000 licenses issued against original orders for this period.
The Des Moines state parole board released a list of 24 convicts paroled from Iowa penal institutions during April. The names cover multiple offenses and illustrate ongoing reform and supervision efforts across the state system.
Italy wins in Ethiopia but suffers severe trade losses due to sanctions. The League of Nations secretariat notes financial strain ahead. Emperor Haile Selassie visits the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem after fleeing Addis Ababa.

Riots in Salonika escalate as martial law is considered. The general strike grows through Macedonia and Trace with one dead and more than 100 wounded after over 1,000 shots were fired in front of the governor's offices.

The Wallace lumber yard at Marengo Iowa has been purchased by United Lumber Company of Clinton. Milo J Gabriel now leads the Clinton group which already owns Washington Lumber and Fuel and earlier acquired Marengo and Keota yards. The Marengo plant will be reconditioned and added to Gabriel’s growing chain of yards in eastern and central Iowa.
Jubilee Singers of Rust College delighted the audience with a one hour concert at the Methodist church in observance of National Music Week. The all black group sang spirituals plantation tunes semi classical and folk songs with memory accompaniments. Notable numbers included Asleep on the Deep and Victor Herberts Ah Sweet Mystery of Life.
Six people jailed in the Dan Shine murder case as Maynard Lennox 18 of Dubuque admits the slaying and helped stage the body. He corroborates Pearl Hines Shine's claim of an affair and a plot involving four others to murder Shine for his property. The triangle involved Lennox a high school youth and the bride, Pearl Hines Shine, a former Dubuque worker who married Shine a week before his death.
The body of Mrs Lillian Guild, 55, manager of a Stevens Hotel gift shop, was found beaten in her room at the YMCA hotel in Chicago. Entry appeared made through a fire escape window. suitcases were ransacked and a struggle evident.
Dr. Joseph Kinnaman of the state health department announced federal funding and the start of a county mothers program for expectant mothers. An eight thousand eight hundred dollar grant will support nurse staffing, patient care, and seven days of postnatal nursing for those unable to pay.

The Burlington district Epworth League convention in the Methodist church drew 64 registrants at noon with about 100 expected for this afternoon and tonight’s banquet. Rev. Paul Hann gave the keynote on personal cleansing and clear thinking, while Benjamin Bierer of Iowa discussed world peace and international relations.
Dr King, on the program to address the Epworth League rally this afternoon, is the dean of men and professor of philosophy at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon Iowa.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam went to Independence Iowa to extradite James Webb on charges of stealing Delbert Sayre's trailer and other Washington county property the night of April 12. Webb, who reportedly travels to steal and sell trailers, had $700 on him at arrest and Sayre's trailer was later found in West Liberty sold for $5.75. Deputy Kiesey investigated leads linking missing yard gear and barbed wire thefts to the same suspect. Funeral plans are announced for a local resident, with arrangements tentatively set for Sunday afternoon.
The German airship Hindenburg completed the first regular commercial crossing from Europe to North America with 56 passengers and 651 crew. It landed at Lakehurst New Jersey after 61 hours 30 minutes from Friedrichshafen, beating the Graf Zeppelin record.
Mrs Mary Shunterman died at 6 40 P M yesterday at the home of her daughter Mrs Ralph Lytle four and one half miles southeast of town after a long illness heart trouble is given as the cause. She was born November 16 1855 in Lee county daughter of William and Elizabeth Steele. The family moved to Missouri then returned to Iowa after the Civil War. She married B F Shunterman in Batavia in November 1870 and lived in Batavia Eldon Valley Junction before moving to Washington in 1931. Her husband died March 31 1933. She was a member of the Free Methodist church at Fairfield.
The Washington Boy Scouts announce a mothers' program next Monday evening at the Scout cabin. The event begins at seven o'clock with the boys in charge and mothers as special guests.
Mrs Adda Luella Baker Augustine dies after stroke at her West Chester home. Funeral set for Monday at 2 30 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Rev P B Gray in charge. Survived by husband Al and two children, Howard Augustine and Mrs R A Worstell, plus a grandchild and siblings.
