An unexpected resistance halted work on the new municipal WPA pool in Marshalltown as workers digging the filtration pit hit quicksand. The pit must be sunk deeper to proceed, delaying the $50,000 project.
Governor Herring urged the state democratic central committee to replace salary deductions with selling memberships in the Iowa Democratic club to raise campaign funds. The club acts as a vehicle to collect contributions from state employees, with a sliding scale tied to employee income.
Dr. FE D. Plass announced a new cancer clinic to open after July 1 at the University of Iowa hospital. The clinic will include a hospital physician from each department involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Mount Pleasant reports a robin pecking at its image on a basement window of the Universalist church. C H Hamilton, a nearby resident, found the bird fighting its reflection and could only momentarily drive it away.
Des Moines police sought a young desperado who tied up F. E. Kerr, the drug store owner, with an electric cord and waited on customers before escaping with about 80 dollars including 54 dollars from a sub post office fund. Kerr said he endured 17 robberies in two decades.
Creston Ed wing mayor and U S senate hopeful Edwinanning Ottumwa called on Harry M Blair of Washington DC to keep out of the Iowa Republican primary. He said his letter was a reply to a circular from Blair linking Senator Dickinson to a presidential possibility and urged Iowa Republicans to manage their own affairs without eastern interference.
Mrs. Frank Reside of Waterloo plans to plant her seed potatoes to encourage larger yields. She found a potato forming on each sprout while seeds stored in her basement showed multiple new potatoes developing per tuber. Some new potatoes are as small as marbles, but with early crops beginning to run, she hopes for table-sized spuds that could lead the neighborhood.
The Talking Book by American Foundation for the Blind will be demonstrated in Des Moines with Anne Lindbergh's North to the Orient read aloud. The device records on long playing discs and can store over a dozen 12 inch discs for a full novel.
Dr E W Goeth director of the Placement bureau at Iowa State Teachers College says the home economics field is not overcrowded. He notes many women pursue the subject but many do not and as a result positions remain available for the asking.
Geneva reports the Italian delegation quits the league under Mussolini orders and sanctions are prolonged. Rome expresses belief Italy will exit the league. Ethiopian delegation remains, with circles stating Ethiopia’s independence disputed as Italy presses its claim.
Iowa will issue new permit books for liquor stores after July 1, dropping amount and initials columns. Books will have four data columns: date, brand number, bottle count, and store number. The change aims to protect patron privacy and speed transactions while preserving purchase records.
At an adjourned meeting the council passed the resolution accepting the complete west town sewer extension serving hundreds of homes. Sewage now goes to the disposal plant southwest of town. Sunset Park pumps perform acceptably. Engineer Swellyn of Cedar Rapids aided plans, as the council awaits street surfacing and final start dates.
E A Umland, manager of the Washington Cheese Co. plant, clarifies there is no prior Iowa operation by the firm and no link to other Iowa cheese factories. The factory began cheese production recently, mainly serving wholesale markets and large distributors, and is touted as a great asset to the community.
Bethlehem commandery leader Zea Hinshaw announced plans for Ascension Day on May 24 with a parade before services at the Masonic temple. Delegations from Davenport Illinois Washington and other eastern Iowa units are expected, led by Frederick Fischer from Shenandoah Iowa. The Crusaders club will meet tomorrow evening at 6:30 in the Masonic temple with Ottumwa attendees urged to reserve by noon Wednesday.
New York May 12 Six men were sentenced to death for the killing of Edwin Esposito during a hold up at the Avenue X BMT station in Brooklyn. Judge Peter J Bran cato ordered the electric chair for Salvatore Seata Joseph Bologna Theodore Di Donne Dominick Zizzo Eugene Brune and Sam Kimmel all aged 18 to 36. They were slated to die the week of June 22, a first in U S history for six defendants to face execution for a single murder.
Ames Iowa reports a spring decline in hog prices as fall pigs arrive in volume. Iowa State College extension economists say trends may continue downward through May and June with brief recoveries possible. The first half of 1936 pig crop could rise 25 to 26 percent versus 1935, exceeding national increases.
Lester B. Krabill was re-elected by acclamation for a second three year term as head of the county schools. Three board members were elected for six-year terms along with three holdovers. Marsh presided. Grecian was secretary. 23 of 26 eligible voters attended. the session lasted about a half hour.
Washington will be given special mention on the regular V. F. W. hour tomorrow night over WHO Des Moines at 16 45. The broadcast will include a history of the city written by Mrs A Speer with references to the Centennial celebration to be held here.
J W Chorpening sues J M and John A Nickelaus to determine ownership of dairy equipment valued between 500 and 750 dollars. Jury of seven women and five men seated for the case in district court with Judge Bechly directing a verdict for the defendants after evidence for the plaintiff. The note included discussion of upcoming court terms and prior juries.
Thomas H. Robinson Jr. faces a possible death sentence for the kidnapping of Mrs. Alice Stoll. The Louisville DA will seek the death penalty, hold him without bond, and push for an early trial likely mid June. Robinson arrived under guard from California. $4200 in ransom was recovered.
Secretary Henry A Wallace urged the Senate Finance Committee to adopt processing taxes on wheat rye corn hogs cotton rice sugar tobacco cattle sheep rayon and silk. The proposal aims to raise about 220 million annually for the federal treasury as Wallace testified in an open session after earlier secret hearings.
J C Lewis president of the state federation of labor accepted appointment as technical adviser to four U S delegates at the international labor conference in Geneva Switzerland starting June 4 He will depart May 20 from New York and is expected to brief on labor problems of the central United States coal district.
