In Udine region two new earthquakes hit disaster areas while a government spokesman warned the 1000 dead figure may be exceeded. Police report 815 recovered bodies, 523 identified, about 1300 injured. rescue teams persist as rain complicates debris clearing and some survivors are found.
Washington community recognizes Carlton Bump for 25 years of artistic and civic service, including creating the city's official emblem and design work for restoration projects and school productions. The 52 year old VHS art teacher received the Rotary Distinguished Service Award at a Saturday banquet attended by about 90 people. Matt Sojka earned the School and Community Service Award for his 3.93 GPA and wide involvement at Washington High School, with plans to study pre medicine at Central College and Iowa. The event featured Rotary leaders, a Bicentennial Chorus performance, and long time perfect attendance awards.
Washington County residents should register promptly for the June primary. Mail registrations must be postmarked by May 14 and in person at the Washington County Auditor Walter Schroeder’s office by 5 p.m. May 29. Those not moving or changing name may vote with existing registration.
Plans call for an open house at New Washington County Medical Center on May 23 from 1 30 to 4 30 p m. Doctors move in May 28 29 with official opening June 1. Dr Richard Leazenby to join Dr Keith Miller in Washington this month. Ed Gray Plumbing buys the old button factory for soon operating there. Montgomery Ward mail order outlet will move into the northwest square building formerly Coast to Coast now in new quarters on the south square.
Deputy Sheriff Jack Dillon recovered items stolen Friday and Saturday from Walter Reed Walter Bauer and Keith Rowe farms in Washington County. James Leonard Bowen, a Missouri native, was charged with two counts of larceny in the daytime and one at night after some items were found in his possession and others at his home. Bowen, not to be confused with similar local residents, faces multiple larceny counts.
Police investigate two pre dawn break ins at Town and Country Plymouth and Helena Chemical Co. Losses include less than 30 dollars from a auto dealership petty cash and 64 dollars cash plus 26 dollars in stamps from the chemical company. Sheriff Yale Jarvis says drug abuse awareness booklets are available at the Washington County Safety Center and other county locations for interested adults.
Linn County Judge reinstates ban on publishing or broadcasting juror names addresses pictures or sketches in the Kandee Jacoby murder case prompting media to seek Supreme Court review. The order excludes sketches and cites fears of jury harassment while noting sequestration could also protect jurors and their families.

The Iowa weekend highway toll rose to eight with two 21 year olds, Richard Smothers and Edward Turner, killed on U.S. 52 when their car left the road and struck a bridge. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Earlier, James Sackman, 16, and his brother William, 15, of Muscatine, died in a head on collision on Iowa 70 south of West Liberty involving a semi trailer.
Directors of the Washington Community School district will meet Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the board room at the administration building. Agenda includes graduating seniors list and Commencement set for May 25 at 8 p m. Discussed items cover summer school personnel, typewriter purchases, bids on used equipment, a piano for the high school vocal music room, dust collection system for the industrial arts department, and staff recruitment status.
Iowa Department of Environmental Quality seeks a 1.2 million federal grant to fund a comprehensive state water quality management plan through 1978 under Section 208 of the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act. The effort follows six river basin plans and involves basin representatives, regional agencies, and at-large appointees.
