The annual Washington Junior High Fashion Show will be held Monday May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Junior High gym. Eighth and ninth grade home economics students will model about 200 sewn fashions, with a large Uncle Sam as the central decoration. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Highland graduation ceremonies will begin at 8 p.m. May 17 in the Highland High School gym. Senior class selects Donna Thomann and Dan Fox as speakers. Awards and scholarships will be announced. Top ten honors include Thomann Metz Metz Kaufmann Roberts Kirchner Fox Shalla Conry Roberts.
A Polk County District Court jury awarded Des Moines couple Frank and Kathrine Kooyman $600000 for a traffic crash that left their 11-year-old daughter paralyzed from the chest down. The bus driver and Wilmer Van Wyk were named in the suit. a prior out of court settlement with the Des Moines School District reached $500000. Total verdicts around $1.1 million, the largest in Polk County for a personal injury case.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi will make an official and friendly visit to the Soviet Union starting June 8, in response to an invitation from General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, government officials announced today in New Delhi.
Edmund D. Morrison Jr of Washington has been elected to the board of governors of the Iowa State Bar Association at Ottumwa during a board of directors meeting of the 8A Judicial District Bar Association. Morrison serves as district president and has 25 years on the state forms committee. The 8A district comprises ten southeast Iowa counties. Edwin F. Kelly Jr of Fairfield was named district president, Sidney E. Drake of Centerville vice president, and J. E. Baumert of Sigourney secretary treasurer. Morrison presided at the district association annual meeting after the directors meeting, with a program by F. W. Tomasek of Grinnell.
Merritt McDaniel of Washington announces the sale of McDaniel Drug Store to Larry Bartlett. Bartlett, Drake University graduate, has worked in Ankeny Moline and Iowa City. he and his wife Sara Knapp Bartlett with sons Andy and David are settling in Washington. The McDaniel family has long served the community since 1920.
Iowa Supreme Court voided a temporary ban on publishing juror identities in the Linn County murder case of Kandee Jacoby. The ruling came after Des Moines Register and Tribune Co. challenged Osmundson’s order barring names sketches or photos of jurors, citing open records and public trial rights. The press argued safeguards exist and sequestration could protect jurors if needed.

Des Moines UPI reports the Iowa Senate gave final approval to a broad overhaul of the state criminal code, sending the bill back to the House. The measure includes major changes such as a statewide ban on nude entertainment in liquor establishments, an expanded rape law to cover husband wife relationships, and Hill’s restrictive rider on explicit material.
United Auto Workers President Leonard Woodcock joined Carter at a Detroit news conference and endorsed his bid. Henry Ford II appeared at a fundraiser and voiced support, while Ford pledged to decide later on November preferences. Ford campaigned in Omaha as Ford aides outlined a new strategy.
