Washington County Civil Defense Director R B DeLa reports state officials anticipate the Skunk River reaching 14.5 feet this morning. Flood stage at Brighton is 14 feet as streams run full after recent rains. Sunshine today may help, but more rain is expected later in the week.
The Extension sponsored home landscaping tour moved to 709 South Second Avenue due to wet yards. It begins at 6 15 p m and visits John Winga Sr Norman Schoonover yards before ending at Richard McCleery and Dr Max Smith homes on South Iowa Avenue. Jean Olson of Ames will discuss shrub selection on the tour.
Mitchellville Mayor Jim Hay said officials will seek an automatic flashing signal at the Elm Avenue grade crossing on the Rock Island Lines track after a car train collision killed Rachel Maria Holtman and her 14-year-old son David.
The Porkettes sponsor a Pork Queen Contest on June 1 with rules for county district and state entries. Contestants must be single ages 16 to 19 on Jan 1 1972 and live on a pork farm or be linked to pork production. A news photo and a five minute pork essay are required.
Twin City Plaza of Omaha donated 170 acres in Council Bluffs for the proposed interstate riverfront park along the Missouri River. The gift to the state of Iowa was announced by Sen. P. J. Morgan. This follows a prior 800 acre donation last November by Dr. and Mrs. Harold Gifford of Omaha.
U S Navy mines target Haiphong and five other North Vietnamese ports to choke supplies while ground fighting across Kontum and central coast regions intensifies. U S jets down MIGs and a navy admiral dies in Gulf of Tonkin crash amid broader strikes into rail and road links from China.
President Nixon sealed North Vietnamese ports with mines and ordered rail interdiction to Hanoi China link as U.S. officials monitor Moscow reaction. Tass condemned the action but offered no immediate threat while Washington fields calls of support.
United Press International reports considerable cloudiness across Iowa with lows near 40 in the northeast and mid 40s in the southwest. A chance of scattered showers exists in the extreme west tonight and across the west portion Wednesday, with Wednesday highs mostly in the 60s.
Congressman Fred Schwengel of Davenport reacts to President Nixon's mining of harbors and calls for an end to the war. He notes risks of direct Russia China confrontation, questions South Vietnamese performance, cites aid figures, and urges renewed negotiations leading to withdrawal within four months. He supports POW releases and an internationally supervised cease fire.
A young physician candidate Dr Gary Olson and his wife tour Washington and area medical facilities to decide where to start practice in Iowa. Olson, 27, formerly of Olds, starred in 1962 high school basketball and later played at the University of Iowa. He interns at Broadlawns in Des Moines and may join another intern in a joint practice. The doctor search committee, led by Dr John Helscher and others, has invited several doctors to Washington to address the local physician shortage. funds are low and donations are requested.
The Captain's Table hosts the first session of a four part business and community development clinic led by Jim Frier county extension director. Dr Dave Hammond outlines exporting base multipliers and how to expand Washington's economy while noting agriculture's shrinking job share and the need to grow other sectors. Thoughts on growth will continue at the May 16 session titled What are the Trends.
